UNO Awarded Nearly $2 Million NSF Grant to Support Low-Income STEM Students
The University of New Orleans has received a six-year, $1,998,718 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide scholarships and support services for low-income students pursuing degrees in biological sciences and computer science. The project, Transitioning Low-Income Urban Students into the STEM Economy Through Scholarship Support, is designed to increase retention, graduation and career readiness among academically talented students with demonstrated financial need.  Read more

The Beach at UNO Dedicates East Campus to Former Congressman Bob Livingston
The Beach at the University of New Orleans dedicated its East Campus today to Robert Linlithgow "Bob" Livingston Jr., former U.S. Representative from Louisiana, with a sign unveiling and reception attended by community members and dignitaries including U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu. UNO President Kathy Johnson was among the speakers at the dedication, highlighting Livingston’s decades of leadership and influence in Louisiana politics.  Read more

Five University of New Orleans students spent part of their summer immersed in the Kaqchikel Maya language and culture during the second Kaqchikel Maya Study Abroad program in Guatemala, held July 6–26.  Read more

Alumni Spotlight: CEO Mario DeLuca Gains National Recognition from Microsoft and Starts a Franchise
Mario DeLuca started his company DeLuca Technologies one year after Hurricane Katrina hit. Since then, he has seen incredible success, including having his latest venture showcased by Microsoft in a global customer success story. DeLuca partnered with local entrepreneur and founder of Doggie Bus Troy Bergeron, to make the “Uber for Dogs” app. However, this success did not happen overnight. DeLuca has had a love for programming since 6th grade.  Read more

UNO Researchers Use Extended Reality to Assist Infrastructure Inspections
A new research project at the University of New Orleans is exploring how augmented reality can improve the accuracy and efficiency of civil infrastructure inspections. Supported by the Louisiana Transportation Research Center, the study integrates extended reality (XR) technologies with machine learning and computer vision to assist inspectors in evaluating structural conditions in real time.  Read more

UNO to Honor Entergy Executive Kimberly Cook-Nelson, Acclaimed Chef Edgar Chase IV at 2025 Alumni Gala
The University of New Orleans has announced the recipients of its top alumni honors for 2025. Kimberly Cook-Nelson, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Entergy, will receive the Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni Award. Chef and entrepreneur Edgar “Dook” Chase IV will be recognized with the Norma Jane Sabiston Distinguished Young Alumni Award. Both will be honored at the 2025 Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni Gala on Thursday, Nov. 6, at The National WWII Museum’s Boeing Freedom Pavilion.  Read more

Dr. Anthony “Tony” Licciardi, a gratis faculty research associate at the University of New Orleans Survey Research Center, has received a prestigious national award for his role in developing TheFairPayApp.com, a judicial tool aimed at promoting fairness in court fines and fees.  Read more

UNO Awarded Grant to Launch Food Waste Reduction Pilot Project
The University of New Orleans has received a grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation to pilot a sustainability initiative aimed at reducing food waste through composting and community gardening. The award will support a project titled "Lowering Food Waste Through Gardening" and will run from May 1 through October 31, 2025.  Read more
