The focus of the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School is to provide a meaningful learning experience and a favorable learning environment for all its participants. To this end, classes are kept small and faculty members are selected carefully and are encouraged to enhance their courses by taking advantage of the European setting through class field trips and guest lectures. The small class sizes have become characteristic for UNO-Innsbruck and help students bond with each other and their professors. Each class is capped at 18 U.S. students, but is also open to students from the University of Innsbruck, UNO’s partner institution abroad. This gives all students the opportunity to meet their peers and exchange perspectives, opinions, and experiences in class.
The academic regulations currently imposed at the University of New Orleans will apply in Innsbruck as well. All students must enroll in and maintain 6 credit hours, i.e. 2 courses. All courses listed carry 3 hours of semester credit that will be transferred back to the students' home institution via electronic transcript.
“My greatest learning experience was being integrated into a classroom with local students. They served as insightful and inspiring figures to help us comprehend what being a European citizen is like.” Carly High, The University of North Carolina

Eligibility & Admission
Academic Admission Requirements
Undergraduates with a 2.5 cumulative GPA and graduate students with a 3.0 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply to the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School. Non-UNO students must submit an official transcript and other application materials to the UNO-Innsbruck program administration. New students seeking college credit must meet the general admission requirements of the University of New Orleans.
Student Conduct Admission Requirements
Students must be in good standing with their home institution to be considered for admission to the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School. As part of the program application, all students must complete the “Academic & Disciplinary Record Form,” including the authorization to release academic and disciplinary records to the UNO-Innsbruck program administration for verification with the Student Conduct office at the home institution. These records, which will be reviewed by authorized program personnel only, will be used to determine eligibility for admission to the program. Students on disciplinary and/or academic probation will not be accepted to the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School. After review of all application materials, students will be notified in writing of their admission status with the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School around mid-December.

Disability Accommodations
Disability Accommodations
The University of New Orleans is committed to providing for the needs of enrolled or admitted students who have disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).
University policy calls for reasonable accommodations to be made for students with documented disabilities on an individualized and flexible basis. However, it is the responsibility of students to seek available assistance at the University and to make their needs known. Persons requiring disability-related accommodations for study abroad must notify the program administration at the earliest possible date so that their needs may be properly assessed and reasonably accommodated. -
Registration & Scheduling
Registration is complete upon receipt of a student’s formal online application, deposit and several other forms (See Application & Program Materials). Students will be notified mid-December in writing when they are accepted into the program. NOTE: The program administration does not recommend that a student purchases his/her plane ticket until accepted into the program.
Course scheduling will be arranged based on a student’s preference list. Students must meet all prerequisites, if applicable. In the event of time conflicts or if class quotas of 17 per class have been reached, students will be assigned to course(s) on their alternate list. Both first preferences and alternates must be listed on the course selection form. Class registration will be based upon date of acceptance.
The UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School requires all students to complete at least 6 hours (2 courses).
Students may change classes until departure to Innsbruck by sending an email to innsbruck@uno.edu. The request to change a class has to be in writing and can only come from the student. If applicable, courses must be pre-approved by the home institution before a change can be made, and students must meet the course requirements. If the class requested is full, we can place a student on a waiting list for this class, but we will not make the class change until a space becomes available. There will be no class changes conducted during the program. All students will have to have their classes finalized before arriving in Innsbruck.

Academic Information
In keeping with the purpose of The UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School, courses taught are those enhanced by the setting in Austria and Europe. A concerted effort is made in all courses to reinforce the classroom instruction with the rich cultural surroundings.
All courses are taught in English. However, students are urged to take a German or Italian language course either before or during the summer for a better appreciation of the European experience.
All courses listed will carry three credit hours unless otherwise indicated. The academic regulations currently in force at the University of New Orleans will apply in Innsbruck as well. Freshmen and sophomores are eligible to enroll in courses numbered 1000 and 2000, and upperclassmen (over 59 hours of credit) may take any of these courses as well as those numbered either 3000 or 4000. Several classes have prerequisites, which must be met.
Graduate students are eligible to enroll for graduate credit in courses numbered 4000 and above. 4000 level classes may have a 5000 level section added for graduate students upon request.
Guest students are responsible for securing approval from their own schools for the courses they wish to take.
Mid-term and final examinations will be given in all courses. Regular class attendance is required of every student. Missed classes without a formal excuse will result in a grade reduction of 5 points in the class.
An official transcript of letter grades and credit hours earned will be digitally sent by the University of New Orleans to all students’ home institutions who complete the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School. If a student is looking to obtain a hardcopy of their transcript, they will have to go through the University of New Orleans' Registrars Office to request a transcript.
All students will be asked if they would like to receive a certificate of attendance reflecting course grades.

Class Attendance
Class attendance is mandatory. Due to the very intense and fast-moving nature of this program, NO unexcused absence is permitted. An excused absence for medical or other legitimate reasons can be obtained from the program nurse or the program administration. An unexcused absence will result in a 5 point reduction for the course. Timely arrival to class is also required; repeated tardiness will have an effect on your grade. For a full attendance policy, please refer to your course syllabus, which will be distributed on the first day of class.
This strict attendance policy is justified for a program of the intensity, brevity, and academic integrity of the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School. We have recognized the attraction of travel opportunities in Europe by scheduling long free weekends. In return, we require that students attend classes.

Textbooks
A textbook list is usually available by the end of April and the textbooks can then be purchased online (UNO Bookstore or elsewhere). The UNO Bookstore will list the exact book, correct edition, etc. as ordered by the professor. It also provides used textbooks and may buy back your textbooks if you wish to sell them. If available the UNO Bookstore can provide digital versions of the textbook (e-books). Your textbooks will be shipped to your address in the US. You have to bring your textbooks with you to Innsbruck.
Do NOT wait until you get to Innsbruck to order them! Shipping will be exorbitantly expensive and will take a long time.
Class Field Trips
Most students in THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL will enjoy the opportunity to take field trips within Innsbruck as well as other parts of Austria and across international borders to Italy and Germany. These trips are integral to the courses, are conducted by the professor of each class, and are mandatory. Most short excursions carry no additional costs to the students. Some of these field trips are scheduled on the first weekend.
We are convinced that these field trips provide some of the real highlights and exceptional experiences of THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL.
Students should consult the list below as well as the individual course descriptions on our COURSES page for details of courses requiring field trips, or call THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL office at the University of New Orleans.
In keeping with the purpose of THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL, the courses selected are those that can benefit from their setting in Austria and Europe. A concerted effort will be made in all courses to reinforce classroom instruction with the rich cultural surroundings. Field trips are essential components of course instruction. Missed field trips can result in a full letter grade penalty. We advise all students to make their travel plans around the course schedule.
