Resident Assistants at The University of New Orleans

A Resident Assistant (RA) is one of the first friendly faces you'll encounter on your floor. These student leaders are dedicated to enhancing your living and learning experience in the hall. RAs organize programs, foster community, and offer valuable tips and advice. Alongside RAs, each hall has a professional staff comprising a Hall Director and an Assistant Hall Director, responsible for supervising RAs, managing the building, and serving as additional resources for you. Together, they monitor maintenance requests and uphold hall security protocols, ensuring a supportive and safe environment for all residents.

  • Resident Assistant Compensation
    • ​​​​​​Opportunity for Additional Hourly Wages: Should the Resident Assistant choose to work supplemental desk shifts outside of their 4 required Resident Assistant Desk Hours, the Desk Assistant compensation schedule will apply to the supplemental hours. The starting hourly rate is $12.00 with a $0.25 cent raise every two consecutive semesters. The pay raise is not guaranteed and is only considered once all of the following criteria are met. 
    1. A positive performance evaluation
    2. No repeated accountability concerns that have not been addressed
    3. Consecutive (two) semesters worth of work as a Desk Assistant and/or Office Assistant

    If the Resident Assistant is required to work additional shifts in a different department, authorization from the relevant departments and designated University officials is mandatory. The Resident Assistant must be within the permissible 20-hour limit for domestic and international students. The conditions outlined below must be satisfied before being hired.

    1. Submitted FAFSA for the 2025-2026 academic year
    2. Enrolled in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026 Classes (if rehired)
    • Professional Development: RAs gain valuable experience in leadership, conflict resolution, community building, and communication. This experiential learning is a significant aspect of their compensation.
    • Required Meal Plan: Accompanying the scholarship, a required meal plan is provided.
    • Scholarship: Equivalent to the cost of one bedroom in a 4-bedroom Pontchartrain Hall unit.
    • Training and Workshops: RAs often participate in specialized training sessions and workshops to enhance their skills in areas such as peer counseling, crisis management, and event planning.
  • Resident Assistant Position Requirements
    • Conduct: In order for you to be considered for the Resident Assistant position you must be a full-time student in good academic (2.50 or above) and good conduct standing (meaning you are not currently on probation, involved in a current case, or have outstanding sanctions). You must also attest that all of the information provided is accurate to the best of your knowledge. By completing the application, it will give the Office of Residential Life permission to check your records and grades.
    • Credits: You must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits for the semester in which you apply for. 
    • FAFSA: Your FAFSA Federal Student Aid Application must be on file.
    • GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA
    • Responsibility: Demonstrate the ability to embody positive behavior, effectively enforce policies, and serve as a valuable resource for residential students.
    • Training: You must attend the FULL training (no exceptions). Our training is held on August 1 at 5 PM - August 10, 2025. Opening is August 10 - August 17, 2025. R

     

  • Resident Assistant Committments

    Please note that the general expectations outlined serve as a concise summary. Additional responsibilities and expectations specific to each role will be thoroughly communicated during comprehensive training sessions and ongoing throughout the year. The list above provides a foundational overview, and individuals in each position will receive detailed guidance to ensure a clear understanding of their unique responsibilities within the Office of Residential Life at the University of New Orleans.

    • Administrative: Assist with assigned administrative duties promptly.
    • Community Presence: Connect residents to the larger community and campus.
    • Crisis & Conflict Management: Act as the first responder to conflicts, documenting incidents promptly and appropriately.
    • Desk Management & Shift Coverage: Verify residents or guests entering the building, enforcing access regulations.
    • Ethical Standards: Adhere to the Code of Ethics, promoting inclusiveness and civility within the community.
    • Hall Closings/Openings: Assist with resident checkouts/check-ins, coordination/preparation of the Occupancy Report,Assist with resident check-ins, checking rooms to prepare the building for opening, prepare area keys and paperwork for opening.
    • On-Call: Maintain duty log, complete assigned rounds, and other administrative tasks.
    • Programming: Attend community activities with residents to promote community connection and educate on safety. Conduct intentional conversations with residents to encourage participation in the Residence Hall Association. Facilitate social, educational, cultural, and recreational events, supporting residents' personal growth.
    • Special Department and Campus Events: Perform RA duties during special departmental and campus events and breaks, including but not limited to Academic Breaks, Open House, Explore UNO Weekend, Homecoming Week, Selection Weekend, Family Weekend, Privateer Plunge, weather emergencies, and any other events as directed by the Office of Residential Life.
    • Training: Complete all mandatory in-services, online training, and modules given during the agreement period. Attend all UNO and community training sessions and workshops, including summer, fall, and winter training.

    Additional responsibilities and expectations will be communicated during training and throughout the year.

Office Assistants in the Office of Residential Life

OAs are part-time student workers supporting the professional residential life team with administrative tasks during business hours (8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.). They play a crucial role in maintaining organized and confidential student records, as well as providing assistance to our residents and potential customers in various capacities. 

  • Office Assistant Responsibilities
    • Administrative Support: Assist the professional residential life team with various administrative tasks during designated business hours.
    • Customer Service: Provide friendly and effective customer service to residents and potential customers visiting the main office.
    • Documentation Tasks: Perform filing, copying, and other administrative duties as assigned by the professional staff.
    • Facilities Coordination: Escort facilities team members when needed, ensuring coordination for maintenance tasks or other related activities.
    • Phone Assistance: Answer phone calls, addressing inquiries, and directing calls to the appropriate staff members.
    • Record Management: Help organize and maintain student records, ensuring confidentiality and accuracy.
    • Vehicle/Bike Registration: Manage the registration process for residents' vehicles and bikes.
  • Office Assistant Compensation

    New employees start at the entry level of the approved payroll schedule, with an hourly wage determined by hours worked.

    Positions have an hour rate of $10.00, with a 0.25 cent raise every consecutive two semesters, with a positive performance evaluation.

    To ensure continued eligibility for the position, individuals are required to work a minimum of 6 hours weekly, considered as "permanent" hours, allowing room for growth within the role.

  • Office Assistant Position Requirements

Desk Assistants in the Office of Residential Life

Pontchartrain Hall offers around-the-clock front desks to support our residential students. Student desk assistants, employed by the Office of Residential Life, are stationed at these desks to deliver friendly and efficient customer service to both residents and guests of the halls.

  • Desk Assistant Responsibilities
    • Administrative Support: Assist with various administrative tasks, such as filing, data entry, and other duties as assigned by the professional staff.
    • Collaboration: Work closely with other student staff members and professional residential life staff to ensure a cohesive and supportive living environment.
    • Customer Service: Offer assistance, information, and support to residents, parents, and other guests.
    • Emergency Response: Follow established protocols for handling emergency situations and contacting appropriate personnel.
    • Front Desk Operations: Manage the front desk, signing out equipment, answering phone calls, while providing a welcoming and helpful presence for residents and visitors.
    • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate logs and records related to front desk activities such as guest check-in /out procedures.
    • Reporting: Report any facility or safety issues to the appropriate personnel for resolution. Assisting residents with any maintenance requests.
    • Resident Assistance: Address resident inquiries, concerns, or requests and provide information about campus resources. Escalating concerns to the Resident Assistant on duty or other personnel. 
    • Security: Monitor access to the residential facility, ensuring only authorized individuals enter.
