Residential Program for the Blind

In 1987, TRAC began offering a summer residential program for college-bound students with visual disabilities to learn essential skills for college success. TRAC now offers 8-week residential programs for people with visual disabilities of all ages preparing for entry or re-entry into the workforce or seeking further education and training.

Class sessions are offered several times per year. Residential students receive the following: assistive technology and computer training, Orientation and Mobility/Independent living and recreation.

Computer Training

Students are taught how to use screen-reading and/or screen magnification software to access standard business software. Computer training topics include:

  • Basic Operations of Windows (file management and accessory programs)
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Internet
  • E-mail
  • iPod, iPhones and iPad technology

Orientation and Mobility / Independent Living

Students receive opportunities to enhance cane travel, social, and independent living skills needed to enhance independence and to compete at work or school.

Recreation / Independent Living

Students practice their mobility skills through a variety of activities, such as grocery shopping, movies with audio description, eating out, bike riding, bowling, and a bus trip to the French Quarter.
