Solar & Energy

Energy Use at UNO

The University of New Orleans promotes sustainable energy use through a number of initiatives. We have installed energy-efficient light bulbs, a solar charging station, an electrical vehicle charging station, and more. We have installed energy-efficient light bulbs, solar benches, an electrical vehicle charging station, and a solar array to increase our use of solar energy.

To find and visit these installations, visit our UNO Sustainability Map.

Solar Camp - Summer 2025

We have installed energy-efficient light bulbs, solar benches, an electrical vehicle charging station, and a solar array to increase our use of solar energy. In summer of 2025, the University of New Orleans held its first solar camp where students learned about the importance of solar energy and its positive impacts on the environment around us. Students also had the chance to see solar projects, specifically those implemented on UNO’s campus, such as solar benches and a solar array. This camp introduces students to renewable energy and the careers that involve sustainability. To learn more, visit this year's flyer.

Solar Benches

In summer of 2025, the University of New Orleans partnered with Blue Bolt to install 4 solar benches around campus. These benches act as charging stations powered by the solar energy they collect daily. Head to one of these locations to visit a bench: the University Center, Earl K. Long Library, Human Performance Center, Recreation Center. Visit our Instagram to see the solar benches in action!

Solar Array

Completed in 2024, the University of New Orleans partnered with Bernhard to install a solar array, consisting of over 3,000 solar panels, on campus. This installation benefits the campus not only sustainably but also financially, saving money and reducing energy use at the same time. To learn more, visit this link.

Solar Dashboard

Through the addition of multiple solar energy installations on campus, the University of New Orleans uses renewable energy to save emissions and lower energy use while operating the campus. Our Solar Dashboard is an interactive page that allows viewers to see how much energy the university has saved since the dashboard’s creation in April 2024. To learn more and see an interactive map, visit our Solar Dashboard.

UNO students are resourceful

Using the solar-charging station located in the center of Pontchartrain Halls, a group of UNO students gave a memorable and musical performance.

As the locals say, "Only in New Orleans!"

Transportation

When possible, try to take public transportation or ride your bike to reduce emissions from vehicles.

If you do choose to bike, plan your route using the New Orleans Bike Easy Online Map. It will show you the best routes for bike friendly travel.

To find and utilize on-campus bike racks, visit our UNO Sustainability Map.

Google Maps can help you plan your trip via public transportation, and the New Orleans Region Transportation Authority (RTA) has an app that gives real time updates on bus and streetcar location.

When you do have to drive, reduce trips by planning to do activities in the same area. When possible, car pool with friends instead of driving multiple vehicles.

If you drive an electric vehicle, there is an EV charging station at the Engineering Building on campus.
