Annual Events and Activities

Student Affairs is involved in many traditional events and activities that take place on an annual basis. Whether it is through direct leadership to departmental events or advising student organizations or even providing support to university events, Student Affairs works very hard to enrich the lives of our students.

Although it would be impossible to list all of the special events throughout the year that we're involved in, below you will find information about what we call traditional or yearly events that take place at the University of New Orleans.

Start Fresh Fest
A festival that enables freshmen and other students to become acquainted with UNO. Held on the Wednesday during the first week of school each year, Start Fresh Fest features music, food and fun, as well as campus and community resources. Vendors include the UNO Credit Union, area companies, UNO campus departments and UNO student organizations

Privateer Plunge
Taking place all across campus during the first six weeks of classes, Privateer Plunge offers new students “an array of fun filled and educational opportunities to help you understand the resources available to you and to meet other UNO students, faculty and administrators.” Students who participate are eligible to win prizes!

Welcome Back Block Party
A campus-wide back to school event held on the first Friday of the fall semester. Sponsored by the Student Activities Council, the Welcome Back Block Party offers new and returning students the chance to hang out together and relax before school gets too busy.

Privateer Camp
This is a wonderful opportunity for new students to find out about all of the amazing resources available to our Privateers. Topics covered included discussions on leadership styles, UNO traditions and time management, just to name a few. Today’s participants are sure to be our tomorrow’s leaders at UNO!

Drive-In Movie
An annual event sponsored by the Student Activities Council since 1996. On a Friday evening in October, the parking lot across from the Education Building is converted into a drive-in theater, and students, staff and faculty drive their cars in to watch two recent movies.

SUCbAUF
The world's largest crawfish boil. "Students Unwinding with Crawfish and Unprecedented Fun" is sponsored by the Student Activities Council, which purchases 12,000 pounds of crawfish, and serves it free to all UNO students. The event is always held during the last week of classes in the spring, and there are bands, games, and all kinds of fun.

Events

Homecoming
A celebration that welcomes UNO alumni back to campus. Homecoming features a marquee basketball game at which the homecoming court is announced. The Student Activities Council sponsors a party following the game.

Greek Week
A time for fun, fellowship, and competition among UNO fraternities and sororities. Greek Week includes educational, philanthropic and school-spirit activities to unite fraternity and sorority members and introduce other students to Greek life.

Enough is Enough
Enough is Enough is a campaign inspired by Dr. Zenobia Lawrence Hikes, vice president of student affairs at Virginia Tech at the time of the tragic shootings.  She charted a course for the future in Student Affairs, declaring, "Enough is Enough," and called on us to act with a "fierce urgency" and stem the tide of societal violence through efforts to create community, compassion and unity.  Event such as sexual assault awareness, asking students to take a pledge against interpersonal violence, and random acts of kindness are planned.

The Hall Career Expo and the Mardi Gras Invitational Career Fair
These are great opportunities for job seekers to explore and investigate hundreds of different employment options across the United States and at home. These are the largest career fairs in the state and the best opportunity to experience global and national organizations and businesses.  UNO invites our students, graduates, and alumni to participate in these events for networking and cutting-edge opportunities.
