Why do Honors?

University Honors is a way for students to demonstrate their commitment to excellence through high-level research as a fundamental part of their academic career. Honors links you to a community of classmates engaged in impactful scholarship. It connects you with contacts outside the university, whether in a career path, in cultural institutions, in local government, or in the community at large. Finally, the University Honors distinction enhances your resume or CV as you consider your next steps after graduation. It is the sort of signal achievement to which you can point in cover letters, graduate school applications, and interviews that makes you stand out as a student.

The Honors Program especially highlights student research. We work to link students with our Office of Undergraduate Research and its network of faculty mentors. Look for more information there about the Tolmas Scholars program, which provides support for student research, and Innovate UNO, our annual research symposium. We also see study abroad as a great way for students to enhance their education, and we work to create Honors pathways for students doing this research.
