Housing

Participants are housed in the Internationales Studentenhaus (ISH) dormitory. To enhance your cultural experience and language proficiency, we request that you are assigned a native German-speaking student as a room mate. The Studentenhaus is a convenient walk to most classrooms and a ten minute walk from the city center. Built in 1964 for the Winter Olympics and recently completely renovated, this well maintained facility has been used for accommodations of UNO's study abroad programs in Innsbruck since 1976.

The Studentenhaus is within convenient, easy walking distance of all major lines of public transportation, grocery stores and other necessary shops, and the historic Old Town. It is a state-of-the-art facility, with strict house rules for cleanliness and security. All AYA students are assigned to a two-bedroom suite, with kitchen and bathroom areas shared with the suite-mate.  All rooms include bed, bedding and bed linens, desk, light, chair, shelves, and wardrobe for each student, as well as a personal telephone, private shower, toilet and kitchen facilities, and hook-ups for internet and cable TV. The rooms are cleaned on a regular basis. Laundry facilities, lounges, music room, game room, TV room, meditation room, fitness room and computer room are available in-house, as well as 24-hour front desk staffing for security. Room leases are for 12 months (full year) or 6 months (one semester), and the Studentenhaus remains open during holiday periods and the semester break.

MEALS

All participants on the AYA program receive a bi-weekly cash meal allowance. Students are free to use this cash as they choose. However, the allowance is intended to provide the main meal of the day, which in Austria is the mid-day meal, on all class days at one of the student cafeteria facilities ("Mensa"). These are excellent facilities used not only by students but also by faculty and business professionals in the community for healthy, low cost meal selections. A typical "Mittagessen" is a three-course meal with soup, hot entree with vegetable, small salad and dessert. There is usually a grill section as well as a section for meatless "whole-food" offerings. Students also have cooking facilities where they reside, and most students prepare their own meals. For fresh produce and other groceries, several markets and shops are close by. Local restaurants abound near the dorm and throughout the city of Innsbruck, offering typical regional cuisine as well as many different ethnic foods. As would be expected, restaurant prices in Innsbruck run the gamut from low to very pricey, but students soon find the places they enjoy and can afford.
