Hamburg University of Applied Sciences

Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW-Hamburg) is one of the largest universities of applied science in Germany. Small groups, interdisciplinary projects and academic support ensure that students feel at home at HAW-Hamburg. The university offers a wide range of degree programs within its four faculties. Most of the students are enrolled in engineering programs, but non-technical departments are also very popular. In all programs theory from lectures is put into practice in the laboratories, study projects are completed in the form of case studies and close cooperation with industry ensures a direct link to the future field of work.

HAW-Hamburg welcomes guest students through cooperations with over 70 European universities, as well as universities in North and South America, Asia and the Middle East. Before guest students come to Hamburg, they are sent a welcome pack with their semester documents, information about their accommodation, street maps, study plans, as well as information about living in Germany. This ensures that they are well-informed before they leave home. German students act as buddies for guest students, the university’s international students club helps international students to settle in. Read this fact sheet for international student exchange programs about the application process, courses taught in English and German, and more.

UNO ISEP Exchange

Regular International Exchange students can go for one semester or for a full academic year. The exchange agreement between UNO and HAW-Hamburg allows students to pay tuition at their home institution but they must pay all other expenses, such as housing, transportation, insurance, meals, etc.UNO students at HAW-Hamburg must pay a "Semester Fee" for every semester they are at HAW-Hamburg. The Semester Fee pays for a pass good for all public transportation in Hamburg.

Please keep in mind that the German academic calendar does not coincide with that of UNO, so those students wishing to study abroad for only one semester may find it beneficial to attend the "summer" semester in Germany. Information regarding the university's scheduling can be found here.

UNO students who wish to apply to go on exchange to HAW-Hamburg, should first see our "Outgoing Students" web page. Once accepted, students may then fill out the Hamburg International Student application, and their required Health Insurance information.

Note: While HAW-Hamburg offers courses in English, fluency in German will increase the availability of courses. Without enough language skills students will be restricted to classes within special programs, or to a small number of courses offered in English. German language courses are offered in all levels and will be credited by HAW-Hamburg yet may not be included in the exchange program.

Courses

Haw-Hamburg offers a number of programs for students who don't speak German: International Management, Art & Design, Film, Information Engineering, Nutrition and Health, and Digital Information Services. Modules are in English or German, and German is not required to complete projects or modules. Students who do speak German can also choose courses from degree programs in engineering, computer science, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, social sciences, marketing and logistics.

Students can also take German language classes at a private language school that the university works with. For students with no German, there is also the possibility to take "Survival German" at the university.

Accommodation

UNO students on exchange at HAW-Hamburg are given priority for rooms in one of the university's residency halls. Cost of accommodation is borne solely by the student on the exchange. Application forms are included in the HAW Hamburg application forms.

Please contact the HAW-Hamburg International Office for more information on housing.
