Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University provides teaching for about 40,000 students a year in the fields of science and technology, health and sport. It is situated on 13 different sites in four of the principal centres of activity of the Rhône-Alpes region of France : the cities of Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Bourg-en-Bresse and the town of Roanne. The University largely contributes to the development of this region through its partnerships with local and national companies and the regional authorities.

Courses are taught in both English and French. Students can also enroll in the French as a second language classes free of charge for 30 hours.

The Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 has been continuously successful in the fields of higher education and research. Lyon 1 University offers an active and rewarding life student experience. The quality of life for students at the Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 is also closely linked to the activities of more than fifty clubs spread over the different campuses.

Lyon, located in the southeast of France, is the capital of the Rhône-Alpes Region and the third French urban area by its population (1,3 million inhabitants). It is 2 hours away by TGV (High Speed Train) from Paris and 1 hour away by car from the Mediterranean Coast and Alpine ski resorts. The Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport makes it easily accessible from all the big cities of the world.

Lyon was historically known as an important area for the production and weaving of silk and in modern times has developed a reputation as the capital of gastronomy in France.

The city is also known for its famous light festival Fête des Lumières which occurs every 8th of December and lasts for four days, earning Lyon the title of Capital of Lights.

Economically, Lyon is a major centre for banking as well as for chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries.
