Documentation Requirements for Academic Appeals

Appeals will only be considered if documentation and timeline requirements are met.

IMPORTANT: Academic appeals cannot be approved for an effective date earlier than the student’s last day of attendance in ANY class. The Registrar’s Office will check your attendance through Canvas activity, and the dates presented there will be used as your attendance/participation date for appeal purposes.

Dropping / resigning due for medical / mental health reasons

A letter from the treating practitioner, medical records, or other official documentation showing the dates of treatment for the health issue.

Documentation from the student regarding how the illness or treatment prevented the student from taking action on their own.

If requesting to drop an individual class and keep other enrollment: documentation demonstrating how the medical / mental health issue is affecting that specific course and not others. The justification portion of the appeal must also clearly explain the extenuating circumstances and why these circumstances affect only part of the student’s enrollment. Appeals of this nature will only be considered during the term the class is taken. Once the term is complete, individual classes cannot be dropped.

Backdated Resignation due to a death in the immediate family

Death certificate or obituary with student’s name listed as a relative

Due to other extenuating circumstances

Documentation from the student regarding the circumstance(s) preventing the student from resigning by the posted deadlines on the university calendar.

Readmission after being scholastically dropped

A letter of support for the student’s request for readmission from the academic advisor. The letter should be provided to the student and submitted with the appeal. In certain circumstances the advisor may not be able to provide the letter directly to the students. If there is such an issue, the advisor should reach out the the Registrar's Office for assistance at unoappeals@uno.edu.

Documentation showing circumstances beyond the student’s control which negatively affected the student’s academic performance.
