The University of New Orleans will launch the “Empowering AI Literacy” micro-credential, a free self-paced credential to help students navigate and succeed in today’s AI-driven world. The innovative offering focuses on AI literacy, not computer science or coding, to increase students’ understanding of the impact of artificial intelligence on daily life, education and work. It will teach students how to prompt generative AI tools ethically and effectively.
“Whether they know it or not, our students interact with generative AI every single day,” said Meredith King, assistant director of the Center for Teaching Innovation. “Our students need to be able to use this technology ethically and responsibly, as well as efficiently. This credential is free for all currently enrolled UNO students and can be put onto social networking sites, such as LinkedIn. UNO is leading the way and giving our students an experience that translates beyond the classroom and into their futures.”
The credential is fully online and designed to fit students’ schedules. Upon completion, students will earn a digital badge that can be showcased on LinkedIn and other professional platforms to highlight their mastery of AI literacy.
In the course, students will learn the following:
- • The basics of AI, including its history and societal impact.
- • How to use generative AI tools effectively, ethically and responsibly.
- • Best practices for protecting data privacy and developing digital literacy.
- • The role of AI in shaping the future of work and how it applies to your field.
The micro-credential includes five engaging units with video lectures, interactive activities and practical assignments. The units can be taken independently and students will earn a badge for each unit. After completing all five units and a final assessment, students will earn a completion badge. The materials will be made available to all students within UNO’s learning management system starting on Friday, January 17.
