Design of an Industrial Mix Room

The project will consist consist of a complete design and implementation plan for an industrial Mix Room. The ingredients to be mixed are hazardous, requiring a system design utilizing Class I Division I regulations. In addition, all electrical designs must meet National Electric Code regulations. The mixer will require a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) that will monitor and control ingredient flow utilizing flow meters and valving.

Ingredients

There will be three ingredients, all classified as hazardous, producing a hazardous output chemical. The following are the ingredients to be mixed:

Input Chemical I — Silicon Resin 652A
Clear, odorless liquid rated non-hazardous by the EPA, but does contain trace elements of hazardous elements.

Input Chemical II — Silicon Resin 655A
Clear, odorless liquid rated non-hazardous by the EPA, but does contain trace elements of hazardous elements.

Input Chemical III — Heptane
Clear liquid, has a characteristic sweet odor, EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, all appropriate precautions must be observed.

Produced Output Chemical — Resin Base
Resulting chemical will be EXTREMELY FLAMABLE, all appropriate precautions must be observed.

Ingredient Combination

The ingredients will be combined in a fixed, predetermined ratio with each ingredient input quantity being measured with the utilization of a flow meter. The ingredient combination must meet the following proportional specifications:

  • Silicon Resin 652A: 50 % ± 0.5%
  • Silicon Resin 655A: 40 % ± 0.5%
  • Heptane: 10 % ± 0.5%

After all ingredients are injected, the mixer will be operated for the period of 20 minutes. This mix time is required to produce the desired chemical output.

Reports

The design process will require a complete set of drawings outlining all layouts and components plus an itemized equipment and material cost list. To monitor progress of the project the following reviews and reports will be required.

  • Design Rationale
  • Risk & Hazard Analysis
  • Environmental Impacts
  • 30, 60 & 90% Drawing Packages

Cost

The students are to keep in mind that this project is being implemented on a limited budget and requires the most cost effective implementation approach. While keeping the costs elements in mind, it is also essential that all system components must be chosen to meet all applicable code requirements.
