Applied Biopsychology Program

Ph.D. in Applied Psychology with specialization in Applied Biopsychology

Biopsychology is a translational, integrative, and rapidly evolving discipline within psychology that can be defined as the scientific study of the biology of behavior. The enriched and exciting atmosphere in the Applied Biopsychology program at UNO differs from many other programs in its applied perspective. This consortium at UNO particularly emphasizes the application of biopsychological principles to research that promotes a better understanding of etiology, risk factors, and clinical characteristics of medical and mental health disorders. The translational perspective aims to guide assessment, treatment, and prevention efforts through advanced understanding of the physiological and neural mechanisms that instantiate behavior.  The Applied Biopsychology track at UNO is personified by collaborative faculty research in biopsychology research laboratories.

Through coursework and lab experience, students are encouraged to explore diverse fields, such as neuroendocrinology, psychophysiology, neuropsychology, and behavioral neuroscience, and to apply these ideas to research, clinical work, supervised practicum, and teaching. Under the guidance of faculty mentorship, graduate students within the Applied Biopsychology track at UNO are encouraged to draw on concepts and methods from diverse areas within biopsychology to formulate their own cutting-edge programs of research. Doctoral students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in biological bases of behavior, psychopathology, statistics, learning principles, and ethics in order to conduct well-informed research on applied clinical topics. The department has been successful in training the next generation of researchers who are translational and integrative thinkers.
