Message from the President

Dear Campus Community,

Given the high winds, heavy rains and potential street flooding expected from what will eventually become Hurricane Francine, the University will make some modifications to its operations. Francine is now predicted to come ashore on the Louisiana coast tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon, but the effects of the storm are likely to be felt in our area ahead of time.

  • Starting today (Tuesday, September 10) at 3 p.m., all classes will be delivered remotely and non-essential employees should work remotely for the remainder of the day. If employees are unsure if they are considered essential, they should check with their supervisor.
  • Tomorrow (Wednesday, September 11) will be a Emergency Closure Day and classes are canceled. Employees will receive special leave and will not be charged annual or sick leave. Students who live in residence halls will continue to have access to meals through Campus Dining. Residential Life and Public Safety staff will maintain a consistent presence in the residence halls throughout the event.
  • On Thursday, September 12, classes will be delivered remotely and non-essential employees will work remotely. If Francine’s impacts, such as widespread power outages, prompt a change in our plan, we will communicate those to you via email, Privateer Alerts, uno.edu, social media, and the news media.

The City of New Orleans has not issued any evacuation orders. Employees and students should make plans to shelter in place during the worst weather and stay off the roads, if possible. We understand that some local students may feel more comfortable going home until after the storm has passed, and we certainly support that decision. Please just communicate with your instructors.

You can keep tabs on emergency alerts from the City of New Orleans at: Emergency Alerts – NOLAReady. I also encourage you to follow local news stations for coverage of the storm and its aftermath.

Sincerely,

Kathy Johnson, Ph.D.
President
