The University of New Orleans hosts a writing contest that will help students attend a UNO Writing Workshop in Ireland or Italy this summer.

“The contest, just like our writing workshops themselves, is open to any and all-- undergrads, graduate students, and non-degree-seeking students from the United States,” said Cavan Hallman, a graduate assistant in the Writing Workshops Abroad program, part of the Division of International Education. “The only catch is that the awards must be redeemed as a credit towards the Summer 2015 Writing Workshops Abroad in either Cork, Ireland or Brunnenburg, Italy.”

For 20 years, the UNO Writing Workshops Abroad program, part of the University's Division of International Education, has welcomed students from across the globe to attend summer workshops, lectures, and excursions in the world’s great cultural destinations. This year’s programs include a month in Cork, Ireland (June 19 to July 18) where students may take courses in several genres of creative writing, acting, film, theatre, and literature.

The Writing Workshop Abroad program in Brunnenburg, Italy (July 13 to August 8) offers students the rare opportunity to study the works of Ezra Pound and take poetry writing workshops in Pound’s gorgeous alpine castle.

Both programs typically cost $4,295 for UNO students and $4,495 for non-UNO students, Hallman said. This contest is sponsored by the University of New Orleans Writing Workshops Abroad and affiliated with the UNO Creative Writing-Low Residency Program, Hallman said.

Submissions are open February 2 through March 2, 2015 for the University of New Orleans Writing Workshops Abroad’s Creative Writing Contest. One grand prize winner will receive a $1,500 award toward attendance at the 2015 Writing Workshops in Cork, Ireland or Brunnenburg, Italy. One second-place winner will receive a $500 award, and additional awards are available for qualified runners-up. The contest is open to graduate, undergraduate and non-degree seeking students in the United States. The deadline for contest submissions is March 2.

Writers may submit:

  • Fiction: 5,000 words or less, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font
  • Creative Non-Fiction: 5,000 words or less, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font
  • Poetry: up to 3 poems totaling 7 pages or less, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font
  • Scripts: 40 pages or less, typed in standard script format

No excerpts will be accepted, complete works only.  If submitting a piece from a larger work, it must stand alone.  The final judges are Fredrick Barton for fiction, Kathy Volk Miller for nonfiction, John Gery for poetry, andJames Winter for scripts.  All submissions will be considered for publication in Bayou Magazine and West Wing Craic.

The contest brings a reading fee of $25 for each submission, with a limit of two entries per writer. Submissions can be made through the fine folks at Submittable.

“At present, about half of our applicants are UNO students, but we also have folks from at least five other states,” said Hallman.

UNO was recently ranked by Publishers Weekly as one of the Top 25 Underrated Creative Writing MFA’s in the country, and Creative Writing Director M.O. Walsh was recently named one of Entertainment Weekly’s “25 Stars on the Rise for 2015.”

The Low Residency MFA program can be completed in just over two years for approximately $25,000,* including tuition and fees for three summers abroad.
