University of New Orleans Lambda Chi Alpha Chapter Celebrates 50 Years

Nearly 140 men spanning five decades of alumni descended on the University of New Orleans Lakefront campus last week to celebrate 50 years of brotherhood.

The UNO chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity was chartered on April 4, 1964, said Marco Perez, general manager of the Lakefront Arena and a longtime adviser to the group. On Friday, Oct. 10, current members and alumni gathered at the UNO Homer L. Hitt Alumni & Visitor Center to celebrate true brotherhood.

"The university alumni venue was the perfect location on the lakefront campus of the University of New Orleans, as it was named after the first chancellor of the university, who was also a brother and was very supportive of charter," said Perez.

University President Peter J. Fos, who like Perez is a UNO alumnus, opened the celebration, paying homage to the University's first Chancellor Homer K. Hitt, who was chancellor of the University back when President Fos was a student. President Fos, a champion of Greek Life on campus, praised the success of Lambda Chi Alpha and encouraged a long and meaningful contribution to campus.

Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity Chief Executive Officer Bill Farkas sent along a video message highlighting successes of the chapter, including recent fundraising success. In August, the University of New Orleans chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity received national recognition this month for its philanthropy work feeding the hungry.

(Last year's annual Watermelon Bash (a week-long series of watermelon-themed events that includes a watermelon-eating contest, a watermelon toss and a final field day) helped to raise more than 70,000 tons of food for Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that leads the fight against hunger in the United States. The national fraternity named the UNO chapter and two others the top three fundraisers for the 2013-2014 academic year.)

Reminiscing and reuniting ruled the 50th anniversary celebration, where a montage of photos from the generations played on the screen.

"The event was a huge success as brothers from the 60s visited with brothers from 2014!" said Perez. "It was truly an unforgettable evening."

Lambda Chi Alpha President Kolby Heid, vice president Tim Breaux and alumni secretary Tim Breaux -- all undergraduate students at the University and current active members -- organized the fun.

Committee co-chairs John Person and Marco Perez, together with alumni members Kevin Walsh, Henry Hom, Chris Musco, Josh Faubert and Lucas Funderburk helped to plan the event.
