UNO Music Students, Alumni Nominated for 2014 Big Easy Awards

Several members of the UNO Music Department family have been nominated for 2014 Big Easy Entertainment Awards, the prestigious music awards presented by the Foundation for Entertainment, Development and Education. Winners will be announced April 21 at a gala at Harrah's New Orleans.

Current student Alexey Marti is a nominee in the "Best Latin Band" category. Alexey, a native of Cuba, is an undergraduate in the Jazz Studies program. Another current Jazz Studies student, Wendell Stewart, performs with the Hot 8 Brass Band, a nominee in the "Best Contemporary Brass Band" category.

Alumni nominees include: Luke Winslow-King, nominated for both "Best Country/Folk Artist" and "Best Male Performer," professor Brent Rose, nominated as a member of the New Birth Brass Band for "Best Traditional Jazz Band," Mark Braud, nominated for "Album of the Year" as part of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and Mike Ballard, long-time bassist with Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, nominated for "Best Funk Band."

Nicholas Payton is also nominated for "Best Contemporary Jazz Artist." UNO alumnus Jim McCormick is also nominated for "Best Country/Folk Band," as is fellow UNO alum Luke Winslow-King.
