O'Brien is a documentarian, news anchor, producer, television personality and philanthropist. In 2013, she launched Starfish Media Group, a multi-platform media production and distribution company, dedicated to uncovering and producing empowering stories that take a challenging look at the often divisive issues of race, class, wealth and opportunity.

O'Brien currently appears on the HBO program "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," and her Starfish Media Group has a partnership with HBO that encompasses a first-look opportunity for scripted projects and long-form programming concepts.

O'Brien was the originator of CNN's highly successful documentary series "Black in America" and "Latino in America," which will continue to be produced under Starfish Media Group. She is also a special correspondent for Al Jazeera America and, in May, she will take the reigns as the executive producer and moderator of the National Geographic Bee.

Earlier in her career, O'Brien co-anchored Weekend Today on NBC and contributed to the Today Show and Nightly News. Her reporting on stories such as the Haitian earthquake, kids and race, Hurricane Katrina, the BP oil spill and the Southeast Asia tsunami helped her and her news organizations win Emmys, George Foster Peabody Awards and an Alfred I. DuPont Award.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, O'Brien and her husband, Brad, created The Starfish Foundation to help disadvantaged young women get to college and graduate.
