University of New Orleans President Peter J. Fos announced that John W. Nicklow has been selected as the University's new provost and vice president for academic affairs. Nicklow has served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. The hire must be approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. Nicklow is expected to begin his duties at UNO during the late spring of 2015.

"I am thrilled that Dr. John Nicklow has agreed to become our next provost," Fos said. "He was selected from a large and talented pool of applicants. He brings to the position an exceptional combination of skills and experience as a faculty member, researcher, fundraiser, enrollment management professional and administrator."
Nicklow became provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois University in 2011. As SIU's chief academic officer, he was responsible for academic affairs and administration, information technology, enrollment management and student affairs.

Under his leadership and strategic initiatives, fall 2013 and 2014 saw the largest freshmen classes in 20 years—following more than a decade of enrollment declines—a tripling of the University Honors Program over a three-year period, and a significant eight point increase in student retention between fall 2013 and 2014.

Nicklow helped grow accredited online programs from six to 21 in the last two years and increased online enrollment 93 percent from 2011-13. He worked to establish new academic programs in fermentation science, advanced energy and fuels, supply chain management and logistics, and STEM education.

"I am extremely excited to become part of the New Orleans community," Nicklow said. "The University of New Orleans has a faculty that is intellectually talented, world renowned and motivated to make a difference. The staff are dedicated to achieving excellent service to our students. And our students create a culturally diverse campus that is full of energy and discovery. This is truly a prestigious institution with a great mission in one of the best cities in the world."

Nicklow is a registered professional engineer who holds a bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering from Bucknell University and a doctorate in civil engineering from Arizona State University. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a diplomate of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers.

His previous positions at Southern Illinois University include assistant provost for enrollment management, associate dean of the College of Engineering and acting chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He has been a faculty member at SIU since 1998. He has published more than 75 articles and is the author of four books.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a top tier, nationally-ranked research university and the flagship of the SIU System. With an enrollment of 17,989 students, it offers associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees and professional degrees in law and medicine.

Fos also announced that William Sharpton will serve as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs until Nicklow begins his duties. Sharpton will take over for Richard Hansen who has been interim provost and vice president for academic affairs since March 2014.
