Hailed by The New York Times as "finely polished ... a fresh source of energy" and by TimeOut New York as "forward thinking," Mantra Percussion was recognized by The New Yorker and TimeOut New York for presenting one of the ten best classical performances of 2012. The group has been featured at festivals, venues, and universities throughout North America, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Carlsbad New Music Festival, the Bowling Green New Music Festival, MIT with Bang on a Can All-Stars, and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.

Co-commissioners of Michael Gordon's percussion sextet Timber, Mantra Percussion gave the work's United States premiere in October 2011 and subsequently toured the work throughout North America. They also gave the New York premiere of Timber at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival in December 2012. Committed to expanding the future of percussion music, Mantra Percussion commissions and performs new, significant works for large percussion ensembles by both established and emerging composers. Devoted to engaging new audiences, Mantra Percussion challenges the standard classical concert format by producing evening-length events that look toward a grander artistic vision.

Michael Gordon's Timber is an evening-length tour de force scored for six graduated, amplified, wooden Simantras. The work brings the physicality, endurance and technique of percussion performance to a new level. In this work, Gordon shapes the music in both polyrhythmic and dynamic waves of textures — often each players' hands are in separate rhythmic "worlds," each traversing a different dynamic contour from loud to soft to loud, similar in some respects to his solo for percussion, XY. Timber was co-commissioned by the Dutch dance company, Club Guy and Roni, Slagwerk den Haag, Mantra Percussion, with support from the Nief-Norf project.
