Emergency management executive Alessandra Jerolleman is the recipient of the 2014 University of New Orleans College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Alumna Award.

She will be presented with the award during the annual College of Liberal Arts Honors Convocation at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 in the recital hall of the UNO Performing Arts Center. Each year, the College of Liberal Arts identifies a graduate who has a distinguished career in his or her chosen profession.

Jerolleman is a senior emergency management and hazard mitigation planner for JEO Consulting Group. Inc., headquartered in Lincoln, Neb., as well as the founder and executive director of the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association. She holds two degrees from UNO; she earned a Master of Public Administration in 2006 and a doctorate in urban studies, with an emphasis in hazard mitigation, in 2013.

"In less than a decade, Alessandra has become a national leader in the field of hazard mitigation," said John Kiefer, associate professor and director of the Master of Public Administration program. "She founded the Natural Hazards Mitigation Association, an organization that has become a significant voice for creating community resilience by promoting awareness of best practices and policies. She has been sought out by a wide variety of organizations for her experience, including the U.S. Congress, and she has an impressive track record as both a practitioner and an academic researcher."

Jerolleman's experience includes serving as a program specialist in the Gulf Coast with Save the Children USA, working on a resilience initiative around children's needs; hazards mitigation planning at the local, state and campus level; and communication education and outreach on the subjects of mitigation and preparedness.

Jerolleman participates in workshops and serves as a speaker on topics including hazard mitigation and climate change; campus planning; threat, hazard and vulnerability assessments; and protecting children in disasters.

In 2012, she co-authored the textbook "Natural Hazard Mitigation" with John Kiefer. A second textbook, "The Private Sector's Role in Disasters," is due to be published in 2014.
