The director of the University of New Orleans Merritt C. Becker Jr. Transportation Institute heads downtown on Wednesday to speak with local and federal leaders.

"They will talk about how transportation creates ladders of opportunity and equality," said John Renne, director of the transportation institute and an associate professor of planning and urban studies at the University.

Renne, an expert in hurricane evacuation strategies for low-lying areas including New Orleans, was invited by the Plessy & Ferguson Foundation to speak at an event that will be held at Gallier Hall.

The event is designed to honor of the 50th Anniversary of the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, landmark legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The federal law ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and in public places.

Renne, a transportation expert renowned around the world, will join the U.S. Department of Transportation, New Orleans Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu and the Plessy & Ferguson Foundation to discuss the Civil Rights Act, access to opportunity and economic growth.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx will serve as keynote speaker.
