UNO Crowns Homecoming Court

A University of New Orleans Homecoming basketball triumph turned royal occasion last night with the crowning of the University’s 2013 Homecoming Court, named during a night of nail-biting competition at the UNO Lakefront Arena.

The crowning came during the halftime show of a glorious victory by the UNO Men’s Basketball team over Texas-Pan American in a 75-73 overtime win. The victory was the second in overtime this season for the UNO men’s basketball team.

Honors were bestowed upon undergraduates Alvin White (King), Amanda McGilvray (Queen), Blake Edwards (Prince) and Adley Murphy-Mejia (Princess). A brass band heralded the royal court as they accepted scepters, crowns, sashes and bouquets of roses.

Also honored with applause were fellow candidates Brandy Campbell, Chase Hukins, Kate Donsback, Mike McCabe, Brandan Bonds and Emily Srofe, who were presented alongside the Homecoming Court on the basketball court.

The new Homecoming court was elected by students through secret ballot. Voting took place Monday through Thursday, Feb. 3-7. A Student Activities Council committee also interviewed the candidates, who campaigned throughout the week.

Game Day is the biggest spirit event of Homecoming week and teams of students brought spirit to the UNO Lakefront Arena with cheers, chants, songs, signs, pom-poms and other accessories. Brightening up the arena were banners created as part of a special competition. This year’s Homecoming theme is “Motion Picture Privateers” and spirited students turned out in costumes depicting cartoon characters and action stars. The SAC Executive Board assessed banners and team spirit for points at the game.

Homecoming Week culminates tonight with a dance in the University Center ballroom. The event, which starts at 7 p.m., will include a DJ, light refreshments and a costume contest.
