UNO Alumni Association Gears Up for Second Annual Crawfish Mambo

Alumni Association calls for volunteers, artists and boiling teams

Crawfish Mambo at UNOThe University of New Orleans International Alumni Association is looking for artists and volunteers
to help with the Second Annual Crawfish Mambo Cook-off and music festival on the Lake,
slated for May 11.

The University of New Orleans Second Annual Crawfish Mambo Cook-off and music festival on the Lake will be a smash hit, if the UNO International Alumni Association has anything to say about it. Having defeated torrential downpours and brought crowds to campus last year, the alumni association has decided to step up its game.

"...New Orleanians are expected to fest on the lakefront as cooking teams compete to be named Best of the Boil and some of New Orleans' best musical offerings grace the stage," said alumni association executive director Pam Meyer. "A first class line up is being booked for entertainment."

The Second Annual Crawfish Mambo Cook-Off and music festival on the lake is slated from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at The Cove on Founders Road on the University of New Orleans Lakefront campus. Live music will play all day. This year's event includes performances by famed New Orleans musicians, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Rockin Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters, New Orleans Night Crawlers, Glen Andrews Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue and the UNO Jazz All-Stars. The event runs rain or shine – last year's event fell on a rainy Saturday and brought a throwdown good time in the Sandbar. Tickets are on sale now at the website below and at local First NBC banks, said Meyer. Admission is $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. Admission brings all-you-can-eat crawfish from 20 or more boiling teams who are competing for the "Best of the Boil" title.

Crawfish Mambo volunteers receive a free entry wristband worth $20 by working a single shift, said Meyer, who is now recruiting UNO students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to participate. Volunteering for one shift at the large outdoor festival brings free parking, a free Crawfish Mambo T-shirt and all-you-can-eat-boiled crawfish.

Help is needed with various tasks, Meyer said, including: parking and boiling team set-up, handling will call and ticket sales, greeting guests at the gate, transporting crawfish from refrigerated trucks to cooking areas, directing traffic, serving beverages, running ice, manning barricades, managing paper produces, assisting boiling teams, coordinating voting procedures and counting votes.

Volunteers will also be needed for Friday Setup, placing signage, for example, Meyer said. At sundown Saturday, volunteers will also be badly needed when the event ends to break down bars, move heavy crawfish tables and straighten tables at The Cove.

Also needed are artists and craftsmen to participate in an artists' village, said Meyer, who may be contacted at pameyer@uno.edu.
