UNO’s Office of First Year Experience Hosts Advising and Registration Workshops

The Office of First Year Experience at the University of New Orleans plans to host this month a series of advising and registration workshops designed to help first-year and transfer students have an easier time enrolling in classes for the spring semester.

“We’re going to show students how to use the WebStar system, which can be really confusing for first years,” said Nicole Ralston, a UNO student success counselor.

The Office of First Year Experience was introduced to UNO under the administration of President Peter J. Fos with the aim of improving student success and increasing retention rates at the university. Student success counselors are familiar with challenges and transitions that typically face university students at various junctures and trained to help struggling students navigate challenging systems.

Among other responsibilities, student success counselors serve as liaisons to students in each of UNO’s five colleges and interdisciplinary studies program; help students to set goals, assist them with time management, answer financial aid questions and address other issues facing new students; manage an early alert system designed to help struggling students get back on track before they get in academic trouble and teach UNIV 1001, a mandatory one-credit course for freshmen designed to help them be successful in university life and academic pursuits.

This summer, student success counselors telephoned UNO students who had not participated in spring registration for fall classes, typically a sign that a student is considering dropping out of college, said Ralston. To the counselors’ surprise, a number of rising sophomores said they had failed to register for classes because they didn’t understand or had forgotten how to use the University’s WebStar system.

Leaving fall registration until the last minute poses a variety of complications, including the possibility that students may not get their choice classes, said Ralston. As a result, the UNO Office of First Year Experience is offering three workshops aimed to teach first years how to register and enroll for classes on WebStar. Student advisers will be on hand to lift any holds on freshman schedules, said Mike Hoffshire, another UNO student success counselor.

“To our knowledge, this is the first time that WebStar tutorials are being offered at UNO. In the past, it has been a really decentralized process with each college being responsible for notifying students about when and where and how to register,” Hoffshire said.

Recognizing their audience, the student success counselors have also created a screenshot video that walks students through the processes of enrollment and registration.
