UNO Welcomes Pianist and UNO Alumnus Johnathan Lefcoski to Campus for Jazz @ the Sandbar

The University of New Orleans welcomes pianist Johnathan Lefcoski to campus tonight to perform with the UNO Jazz Combos performing under the direction of two UNO faculty.

The University’s renowned Jazz @ the Sandbar series, a concert series that was founded by living legend, renowned pianist and jazz patriarch Ellis Marsalis and pairs UNO students with professional musicians, runs every Wednesday this fall through Nov. 14. Concerts take place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Sandbar at The Cove on Founders Road. Concerts are open to the public. Admission is $5. UNO students, faculty and staff enter free with a UNO identification card.

Lefcoski, a classically trained pianist, will perform tonight with UNO Jazz Combos under the direction of UNO jazz studies faculty members Ricky Sebastian and Kris Tokarski. Lecofski is a UNO alumnus.

Lecofski, 38, began playing piano at age 4. By age 14, he had been admitted to the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) where he became interested in jazz and began studying the music of Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk, and Bill Evans with local Winston-Salem jazz pianist Bill Bright, said Cindy Scott, a UNO alumna and well-renowned vocalist who is now an instructor in the UNO jazz studies program. After graduating from NCSA, he headed to UNO, where he studied with Marsalis.

In New Orleans, Lefcoski made a name for himself in the jazz world by playing with the likes of Jason Marsalis, Grammy winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton and with the legendary R&B vocalist Johnny Adams.

He moved to New York City in July 2000 and in 2001 began touring internationally with New Orleans Saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr. Lecofski has traveled the world as part of a U.S. State Department program entitled Musical Overtures.

A New York City resident, Lecofski continues to perform with his trio in New York and actively performs, teaches and records locally and nationally.
