UNO Music Department Hosts Pianist Jeff Gardner for a Lunchtime "Meet the Artist" Workshop – Wednesday, Oct. 17

Born in New York City, Gardner studied jazz with Jaki Byard, Charles Banacos, Don Friedman and John Lewis; classical piano with Ruth Schontal and Ivan Tcherepnin, and harmony with Nadia Boulanger. He has performed with such musicians as Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Eddie Harris, Steve Lacy, Freddie Hubbard, Bob Sheppard, Paulo Moura, Dori Caymmi, Nelson Veras, Toninho Horta and the Piano Quartet with Martial Solal, Jaki Byard, and Paul Bley
 
Gardner has also released 17 CD's as a leader performing with a list of jazz luminaries that includes Eddie Gomez, Billy Hart, Gary Peacock, Rick Margitza, Gilberto Gil and Ingrid Jensen. Gardner wrote and performed in Sao Paulo, Brazil his first piano concerto, Voltas, mixing Brazilian rhythms with jazz and contemporary music. The jazz leader has lived in Brazil and performed on tours around the world since 2002.

According to his biography, Gardner has performed as a solo artist or as a leader at: Nice Festival, Paris Jazz Festival, San Rafael Festival, Maison de la Radio France, Jazz D'Or Festival, New Morning, October Jazz Festival in Saint Lucia, German National Radio (Berlin), Jazz a la Plantation Festival and CMAC in Martinique, Centre des Arts (Guadeloupe), Groningen Jazz Days, Bimhuis, Madajazzcar Festival, Lille World Jazz Festival, Birdseye, etc. and done innumerable European tours with his own group or with co-leader Rick Margitza on sax
 
Active in jazz education, Gardner has taught workshops across the globe and is the author of six books on the subject. He has also taught jazz at New York University.
