UNO Marketing Week Hosts Fleurty Girl, Key Note Speaker Lauren Thom

Lauren Thom founded Fleurty Girl, a New Orleans-inspired line of T-shirts, accessories and other locally made goods, following Hurricane Katrina. In recent years, the homegrown business that started as a way of showing spirit while making money has blossomed into a booming boutique T-shirt and accessories line that now requires two storefronts in the greater New Orleans area.

Today, Thom serves as keynote speaker of “UNO Marketing Week,” which has brought more than 20 speakers from leading organizations around the region to campus since Monday. Organized by the University of New Orleans Department of Marketing and Logistics, UNO Marketing Week is designed to help interested students, particularly marketing majors, polish their skills as they prepare for careers in marketing.

Thom, who is chief executive officer and founder of Fleurty Girl, will address the UNO community at a lunchtime seminar from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 25 in Kirschman Hall, Room 129. The event will be sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Lecture Series and Northwestern Mutual of Louisiana. Lunch will be provided.

“We want to give marketing majors — and all UNO students — an opportunity to hear from successful marketers and to have the opportunity to polish their skills as they prepare for a career in marketing,” said Pamela A. Kennett-Hensel, chair and professor in the department of marketing and logistics.

Twenty speakers this week have addressed students in business school classes this week, including the marketing department’s marketing strategy, principles of marketing, promotion management, personal selling, consumer behavior, sales management, marketing management, strategic marketing, introduction to marketing research, advanced marketing research, advertising and logistics classes.

The speakers hailed from leading organizations in the region, including: Peter A. Mayer Advertising, the American Cancer Society, Northwestern Mutual of Louisiana, FSC Interactive, Big Easy Sports Complex, Offbeat Magazine, Aegis, Ltd. Marketing, il Stratega, Susco Solutions and Touch Studios, Moroch, The Irwin Brown Company, Ochsner Health System and Tales of the Cocktail, a signature Louisiana event.
