On the Airwaves: UNO Experts Help NOLA Residents to Bike Easy

Three experts from the University of New Orleans hit airwaves on Saturday morning, helping New Orleans residents to “Bike Easy.”

John Renne, associate professor of planning and urban studies at UNOand director of the Merritt C. Becker, Jr. University of New Orleans Transportation Institute, co-hosts the “All Things Local” radio show on WGS0 990AM at 9 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month. This week, Renne was joined by James Wilson, board president of Bike Easy, along with board members Vivek Shah and Peter Bennett, both of whom are affiliated with UNO. Shah is completing his Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning. Bennett is a UNO staff member and planner for the Division of Planning, Department of Planning and Urban Studies.

Bike Easy is a nonprofit organization founded with the mission of making bicycle riding in New Orleans easy, safe, and fun.

The radio show discussed key bicycling topics, including: safe streets, the growing popularity of cycling, a new city-wide bike map and the possibility of a major bicycle sharing system for New Orleans targeted to residents and visitors.  A bicycle sharing system, also known as bikesharing, is a service in which bicycles are made available for shared use to individuals who do not own them. Bike Easy has created a feasibility study for implementing such a system in New Orleans.
