MFA Alumna Presents Solo Exhibition at UNO's St. Claude Gallery

The University of New Orleans St. Claude Gallery presents this month “Flourish,” a solo exhibition of work by M.F.A. alumna Christine Sauer.

The show begins Friday, Sept. 8 and runs through Saturday, Oct. 6. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8. A special artist walk-through will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. The gallery is located at 2429 St. Claude Ave. Hours are 12 to 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday.

“Inspired by an interest in nature, science, and the cosmos, Sauer creates imaginative work in painting, textile constructions and sculpture,” said UNO Fine Arts Instructor Kathy Rodriguez in a press release. “Colorful and lavishly textured, her art evolves through an improvisational approach to working with materials and image. Her use of scale, texture, color and overall sense of form engage the viewer in intimate conversation with the work.”

Sauer, who is represented locally by LeMieux Galleries, will create two site specific installations for her first show at the gallery, Rodriguez said. She has exhibited her art in solo and group shows in cities around the U.S.

The artist has also earned several grants and awards, including a Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation Artist Grant in 2011 designed to promote “’entrepreneurial capacity and economic health’” in the state’s artistic and cultural practices, Rodriguez said.

Sauer returned to a fulltime studio career in 2010 after working for many years as head of the Visual Arts Department at St. Martin’s Episcopal School. She currently lives and works in New Orleans.
