    Online Education Pioneer Salman Khan Wows Crowds at the University of New Orleans

    Online education pioneer Salman Khan made good last night on his mission to provide free, accessible high-quality education with a profound speech he gave at the University of New Orleans. During his talk, the founder of Khan Academy identified the classroom of the future as one where questions are asked all the time, students receive supplemental materials to their curricula in online videos and educational software that allows them to review and absorb the material at their own pace, where students work in groups and two teachers serve as facilitators.

    His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV Brings Love, Messages of Strength, Compassion to the University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena

    On foot, by car, by bus and by bicycle, thousands of visitors flocked on Saturday to the University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena to see His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The exiled spiritual leader of Tibet brought messages of peace, kindness, compassion and community and through his presence showed support for communities still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

    UNO Doctoral Student Wins $20,000 Minority Fellowship from the National Board of Certified Counselors

    A University of New Orleans doctoral student has received has been named a 2013 Minority Fellow by the National Board of Certified Counselors. She is among the nation's first recipients of this honor, which brings a $20,000 award. She also is a fellow in the UNO College of Business Administration's new business accelerator program, which helps students develop plans to successfully launch a business. With these two fellowships in hand, Tamia Randolph-Alvarez could soon make waves in the New Orleans counseling community.

    University of New Orleans Announces Line-Up for Spring 2013 Jazz @ the Sandbar Concert Series

    Three UNO professors, all local favorites of the New Orleans jazz scene, will kick off the University of New Orleans Spring 2013 Sandbar Series on March 6 in a performance honoring the masters of Louisiana modern jazz. Now in its 23rd season, Jazz @ the Sandbar, founded by UNO Professor Emeritus Ellis Marsalis, is a weekly opportunity for UNO jazz studies students to get real life experience performing with professional jazz musicians in front of a live audience. The spring series runs March 6 through May 1. The weekly concerts are held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sandbar at The Cove, located on Founders Road. Admission is $5. There will be no spring concert on March 27 due to spring break.

    Enrollment services officers are on the move at the University of New Orleans, where next week they have planned "Explore UNO," an opportunity for recently admitted high school and transfer students to explore opportunities and next steps awaiting them on the Lakefront campus. The event runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 in the University Center ballroom. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. The event will include a welcome, a college browse and breakout sessions focused on topics, including: financial aid, diversity and the UNO admissions process.

    One week after applications became available, administrators had already distributed more than 100 applications to hopeful Orientation Leaders. The final deadline for turning in completed applications stood three weeks away. Deadline is Oct. 24.

    University of New Orleans student Luis Tandalla won a $50,000 first prize on Thursday in a competition to develop innovative software to help teachers score student written responses to test questions. The Automated Student Assessment Prize, sponsored by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, seeks to address the need for high quality standardized tests to replace many of the current bubble tests.
