    The Crescent City Takes Back the Night: UNO Joins March to Stop Sexual Violence

    Students from around the city will march this month in an effort to raise awareness of and prevent sexual violence.     UNO Professor Receives $1.2 Million Grant to Train Early Intervention Educators

    University of New Orleans special education professor Linda Flynn-Wilson has received a 5-year $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to train educators to work with young children with disabilities. Flynn-Wilson, a professor of special education and habilitative services, will prepare educational personnel to be fully credentialed to work with infants, toddlers and preschoolers with disabilities and their families.

    UNO-CHART Continues to Prepare Louisiana Residents for Storms with Risk Literacy Programs

    Federal funding continues to help the University of New Orleans Center for Hazard Assessment, Response and Technology to prepare Louisiana residents for storms. UNO-CHART has recently completed the second edition of a risk literacy curriculum for residents in low-lying parishes. The curriculum, "Preparing for Storms in Louisiana, 2nd Edition," has multiple parts, including a student manual, facilitator's guide, take home guide and flashcards.

The new academic program was approved by the Louisiana Board of Regents on Wednesday. UNO already offers a master's degree in health care management.

    International Students at UNO Enjoy Special Welcome

    On Friday at "The Galley," a popular dining hall at the University of New Orleans, three students marveled over lunch that they had to travel all the way to New Orleans to meet one another, although they come from the same town in Northern India. Fresh off a campus tour, the three men from the town of Hyderabad said that they are already planning cricket matches and serving up curry from their new apartment building in Gentilly. At the same time, they are looking forward to trying New Orleans cuisine and hearing jazz on Frenchmen Street, they said.

    UNO's Planning and Urban Studies Department Completes Mapping and Analysis of Tremé

    Ninety-seven percent of the buildings in the historic Tremé neighborhood are rated either good or fair, according to a comprehensive mapping and analysis project completed by the University of New Orleans Department of Planning and Urban Studies. Out of 670 total buildings rated in the survey, 525 were deemed to be in good condition, while 124 were rated fair and 21 (3 percent) were rated poor.

    Director of the UNO Creative Writing Workshop Creates National Buzz with New Book Due Out in 2015

    A debut novel from a UNO faculty member won't hit shelves until 2015, but it's already generating national attention. M.O. Walsh, the director of the Creative Writing Workshop at UNO, had his first novel accepted for publication in July 2013 by Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam. Einhorn (the editor of bestsellers like The Help and The Widow of the South) acquired the world rights for Walsh's book in a pre-empt deal as soon as she read it, not allowing the book to ever go to auction.

    UNO Imperial Barrel Award Team Honored at Regional Competition

    The University of New Orleans' 2014 Imperial Barrel Award team placed fourth in a field of 13 universities at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists' Gulf Coast Regional Competition held in Houston March 20-21. The Imperial Barrel Award program pits geosciences teams from universities across the world against each other in a competition to analyze an oil and gas reserve. In the regional competition, only the top four teams receive awards.

    Governor Jindal Announces Funding Hike for Higher Education

    UNO Chapter of Golden Key International Honor Society Gains Momentum

    University of New Orleans President Peter J. Fos became an honorary member of the Golden Key International Honor Society this week as the UNO chapter reinvigorated with a jolt of new leadership. Golden Key recently held its first new member recognition event at UNO in more than a decade. The 147th Golden Key Chapter UNO was originally chartered on April 17, 1990, but until recently the group has been inactive, officials said. Restarting the chapter is part of a new era at UNO.

    A University of New Orleans doctoral student has received has been named a 2013 Minority Fellow by the National Board of Certified Counselors.     The University of New Orleans esteemed jazz studies program was founded as a living laboratory where students can learn through performance and study with professors who are also working jazz musicians. Introducing UNO music students to the history and study of jazz through the eyes of jazz professionals is a core underpinning of the elite program founded in 1971 by Professor Emeritus Ellis Marsalis. His father's son, renowned drummer and vibraphonist Jason Marsalis will host a master class for UNO students at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 in Room 103 of the University's Performing Arts Center.     University of New Orleans Announces Line-Up for Spring 2013 Jazz @ the Sandbar Concert Series

    Three UNO professors, all local favorites of the New Orleans jazz scene, will kick off the University of New Orleans Spring 2013 Sandbar Series on March 6 in a performance honoring the masters of Louisiana modern jazz. Now in its 23rd season, Jazz @ the Sandbar, founded by UNO Professor Emeritus Ellis Marsalis, is a weekly opportunity for UNO jazz studies students to get real life experience performing with professional jazz musicians in front of a live audience. The spring series runs March 6 through May 1. The weekly concerts are held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sandbar at The Cove, located on Founders Road. Admission is $5. There will be no spring concert on March 27 due to spring break.

    Enrollment services officers are on the move at the University of New Orleans, where next week they have planned "Explore UNO," an opportunity for recently admitted high school and transfer students to explore opportunities and next steps awaiting them on the Lakefront campus. The event runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 in the University Center ballroom. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. The event will include a welcome, a college browse and breakout sessions focused on topics, including: financial aid, diversity and the UNO admissions process.

    UNO Office of New Student Orientation Sees Rush of Applicants Aiming to Be Orientation Leaders

    The University of New Orleans' Office of New Student Orientation is seeing a rush of applicants aiming to be Orientation Leaders for the 2012-2013 academic year.

    One week after applications became available, administrators had already distributed more than 100 applications to hopeful Orientation Leaders. The final deadline for turning in completed applications stood three weeks away. Deadline is Oct. 24.

    UNO Student Wins $50k Software Challenge Prize

    University of New Orleans student Luis Tandalla won a $50,000 first prize on Thursday in a competition to develop innovative software to help teachers score student written responses to test questions. The Automated Student Assessment Prize, sponsored by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, seeks to address the need for high quality standardized tests to replace many of the current bubble tests.
