UNO Hosts Lecture on Catalan Independence

A law professor and European Union specialist from the University of Miami comes to campus this month to discuss Catalan independence and other separatist movements.

Jean Monnet Professor Joaquin Roy of the University of Miami will deliver his speech "Catalan Independence and Other Separatist Movements" from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015 in the Seminar Room of the International Center, Room 112.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Jean Monnet Professor Joaquin Roy of the University of Miami will deliver a speech entitled “Catalan Independence and Other Separatist Movements” next Thursday at the invitation of Center Austria: The Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies and the Department of Latin American Studies & International Studies.

Roy, who holds a law degree from theUniversity of Barcelona and a doctorate from Georgetown University, is Jean Monnet Professor and Director of University of Miami European Union Center of Excellence at University of Miami. He has published over 200 academic articles and reviews and is the author or editor of 39 books.

On Catalan subjects, his main works are: Josep Conangla i Fontanilles, La Constitució de l'Havana i altres escrits. Barcelona: Edicions de La Magrana/ Diputació de Barcelona, 1986; Catalunya a Cuba. Barcelona: Editorial Barcino/ Fundació Jaume I, 1988. Josep Conangla y Fontanilles. Memorias de mi juventud en Cuba durante la guerra (1895-1898. Barcelona: Ediciones Península, 1998. Roy has also published over 1,400 columns and essays. King Juan Carlos of Spain awarded him the Encomienda of the Order of Merit.
