Theatre UNO Heads to KCACTF Regional Festival in February

Theatre UNO Performs "Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo"The Theatre UNO production of "Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo" heads in February to the Region Six festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

A recent production of a Pulitzer Prize-nominated play has earned the University of New Orleans' award-winning theater program a spot at the regional festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, a year-long competition of university productions from all over the U.S.

"There were 58 participating productions in our region," said David Hoover, chair of the award-winning UNO Film and Theater Department. "Eighteen were held for consideration, and six were invited. We were one of two held from Louisiana, but the only one from Louisiana invited."

Earlier this fall, Theatre UNO received early recognition from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for its performance of Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, a Tony Award-winning play written by Rajiv Joseph. Now, Theatre UNO heads to San Angelo, Texas in late February to perform at Angelo State University, where the KCACTF regional festival for Region Six will take place, said Hoover, the play's director. Region Six comprises colleges and universities from Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Missouri.

The play, which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2011, depicts the lives of two American Marines and an Iraqi translator after the marines encounter and kill the eponymous tiger, Hoover said. As the tiger navigates the afterlife, the humans try to make sense of the horrors that confront them in the war-torn Iraqi capital.

"We will perform for an audience of approximately 1,000 students and faculty from the six state region," Hoover said. "There will be other VIPs in attendance including representatives from the Kennedy Center in Washington."
