UNO Student Housing Hosts Open House for Lafitte Village

The University of New Orleans' Department of Student Housing hosts an open house on Wednesday, to showcase Lafitte Village, the University's housing for graduate students, students with children, married students and students in domestic partnerships.

The Lafitte Village Open House runs from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. Guests should meet at Apartment B108, which will be on display. Lafitte Village is located on the corner of Leon C. Simon Boulevard and Founders Road, across from the University's Engineering Building. Guests may park at the end of the parking lot, closest to Leon C. Simon Blvd., said Director of Student Housing Mike Brauninger. The gate will be open to get to B108. Light refreshments will be served. Furniture displays will be provided by Cort, a Berkshire Hathaway Company.

Lafitte Village reopened last fall, marking a milestone in the University's post-Katrina recovery. Lafitte Village, UNO's married and family housing facility on campus, is home to 48 one-bedroom, one-bath units and 72 two-bedroom, one-bath units.

Monthly rates for one-bedroom and two-bedroom units are $640 and $740, respectively, competitive with similar housing in the area. The apartments come unfurnished. Students may rent or bring their own furniture, Brauninger said. Rental rates include all utilities, basic cable television, internet services through the UNO network system and first-year local telephone service, Brauninger said. Residents may contract with Cox Cable to expand cable television services.

Lafitte Village also has its own live-in manager, Brauninger said. Entrances are controlled by security card access. A state-of-the art security surveillance system keeps an eye on all exterior common and parking areas.

"It's the first time that it's been re-opened since Hurricane Katrina," said UNO Director of Student Housing Mike Brauninger at the reopening in August. "Everything's new except the structure. The cabinets, the electrical, the plumbing, the flooring: Everything is new."
