UNO Announces Line-Up for Spring 2013 Jazz @ the Sandbar Concert Series

Three UNO professors, all local favorites of the New Orleans jazz scene, will kick off the University of New Orleans Spring 2013 Sandbar Series on March 6 in a performance honoring the masters of Louisiana modern jazz.

Now in its 23rd season, Jazz @ the Sandbar, founded by UNO Professor Emeritus Ellis Marsalis, is a weekly opportunity for UNO jazz studies students to get real life experience performing with professional jazz musicians in front of a live audience.

The spring series runs March 6 through May 1. The weekly concerts are held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sandbar at The Cove, located on Founders Road. Admission is $5. There will be no spring concert on March 27 due to spring break.

At the opening concert, UNO jazz studies faculty Victor Atkins III, Ed "Sweetbread" Petersen and Steve Masakowski will perform the classic compositions of Harold Battiste, James Black and Ellis Marsalis. Atkins on piano "conjures up a distinct style that is 'infectious, unconventional, tasteful, and powerful' all at once," said music department spokeswoman Missy Bowen. Petersen "has that big tenor sound that he honed as a star player for years on the Chicago jazz scene...Masakowski is recognized as one of the finest jazz guitarist in New Orleans by Offbeat Magazine and is a longtime member of the highly praised band Astral Project.

Subsequent concerts feature the following guest artists:

  • March 13 | Trumpeter Antoine Drye
  • March 20 | Pianist Joanne Brackeen
  • March 27 | SPRING BREAK
  • April 3 | Pianist Mulgrew Miller
  • April 10 | Saxophonist Rex Gregory
  • April 17 | Singer Kate McGarry & Guitarist Keith Ganz
  • April 24 | Pianist Butch Thompson
