New Student Orientation at UNO Concludes with Registration, Student Send-Off

New friends said "good-bye, but not for long" this morning at the University of New Orleans, where more than 200 incoming fall freshmen participated this week in New Student Orientation. The two-day program is designed to welcome the new students to campus, ensure proper enrollment and provide both students and parents resources and contacts they may need throughout the academic year.

NSO at UNO is just the beginning of the students' transition to college life, said Associate Director for Orientation and First Year Student Success Christy Heaton. In fall, new students also enjoy a six-week welcome programming season called the Privateer Plunge.

Day One of NSO fun ran Thursday from 9 a.m. to nearly midnight and concluded with an overnight stay in the residence halls, Heaton said. This morning, fall freshmen clad in UNO blue gathered for breakfast with Orientation Leaders, an introduction to the Webstar system, Honors program advising, academic advising and class registration.

This year, for the first time, new students will also complete the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE), which will be linked to the National College Student Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), a measurement tool used by universities nationwide to survey demographics, interests and students perceptions of success in areas ranging from student-faculty involvement and academic engagement to supportive campus environment and the quality of academic advising.

The NSSE survey system allows universities and colleges to compare subgroups of students within the same institution or compare students to those from a selected comparison group of institutions. The tool also allows universities to compare results across years or combine results from multiple years, said Heaton.

The BCSSE will allow UNO's Institute of Research and Data Management to track results of a class through four years of college.

Three more orientations for fall freshmen will take place this summer: June 27-28, July 25-26 and August 8-9. Transfer orientations take place June 6, July 11 and July 17. An orientation session for adult students runs August 6.
