UNO President, Athletic Director Named Among New Orleans Magazine’s “30 People You Need to Know”

The September issue of New Orleans Magazine typically features an annual column on notable movers and shakers in the city who are considered this year’s ones to watch. This year, New Orleans Magazine names University of New Orleans President Peter J. Fos and UNO Athletic Director Derek Morel.

“My favorite thing about what I now do is that I have the opportunity to represent my alma mater, the University of New Orleans, and the students, faculty and staff who work at UNO. Meeting people who are UNO alumni or supporters is one of the fun aspects of the job,” Fos tells the magazine.

The University president says that he wakes up every day looking forward to the challenges of increasing UNO’s number of students, showcasing the assets of the University and connecting UNO with the business community.

Hitting newsstands this week, the annual survey of newly notables appears this year as the magazine’s September cover story under the title “30 People You Need to Know.”

Fos, who was appointed UNO president in January and was the subject of a feature story in the magazine in July, tells New Orleans Magazine that while he has experienced many accomplishments during his career, he hopes that his greatest professional accomplishment will be leading UNO into the future and helping the university reach its full potential as a premier university in the nation.

Morel holds responsibility for the success and management of 14 teams at UNO, as well as a team of administrators, coaches and assistant coaches on staff. He appears in New Orleans Magazine wearing a UNO Privateers baseball cap and wielding a golf club.

Morel, who arrived at the University in July, has been highly instrumental in returning UNO to Division I athletics and getting the athletic program accepted into the Southland Conference. He has also recently brought on board a host of new faces prepared to help him achieve his goals.

“It is my expectation that our team will work diligently to lift UNO Athletics to new levels of excellence and, consequently, become a very valuable asset to the University of New Orleans,” Morel tells New Orleans Magazine.

“We invite everyone to join us as we begin our journey to excellence – excellence for the University of New Orleans and UNO Athletics,” he says. “The Privateers are back. All for one … All for UNO.”
