UNO Hoops Plays Ball with Special Olympics Louisiana

The University of New Orleans men's basketball program hit the courts of the Lakefront Arena Auxiliary Gym on Monday, netting some fun for members of Special Olympics Louisiana. For two hours, UNO student-athletes and Special Olympics players stretched, ran drills and shot hoops together. The fun and games were captured in a compelling news video aired by WWL-TV.

“Our staff and team could not be more excited to be a part of this awesome opportunity to invest in our community and work with some of the top athletes in Louisiana,” said UNO head men’s basketball coach Mark Slessinger, who heads into his second season at the University, which opens Nov. 9. “This is a great partnership that we have been working very hard to establish and grow throughout the year.”

Special Olympics members have had several opportunities to interact with UNO Privateers during Slessinger's tenure on the Lakefront. This past April, the Privateers participated in a clinic with participants from the Special Olympics at the Final Four. Later that same month, Slessinger also joined the local chapter of National Football League alumni as a "celebrity bowler" at the 10th annual Special Olympics Louisiana Bowl.
