UNO Hosts UNO Alumnus and Saxophonist Derek Douget Tonight for Jazz @ the Sandbar

Jazz @ the Sandbar continues tonight at the University of New Orleans with a concert led by renowned saxophonist and UNO alumnus Derek Douget.

Founded in 1990 by world-renowned jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis, the 22-year-old concert series at UNO provides a weekly opportunity for UNO students, faculty, staff and friends to enjoy musical performances by some of New Orleans’ most prominent and up-and-coming musicians. Concerts this fall will be held Wednesdays through Nov. 14 and start at 7:30 p.m. in the Sandbar at The Cove on Founders Road.

Douget, a native of Gonzales, La. is described in promotional literature for Jazz @ the Sandbar as a performer who “serenades audiences with equally powerful and melodic vibes as he switches between alto, soprano, and tenor sax throughout his sets…Douget contains an advanced jazz dexterity that is reminiscent of Sidney Bechet and old world New Orleans.” Douget performed with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra on the 2010 Grammy Winning Album “Book One,” which received a Grammy Award Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.

Tonight’s saxophone performance by Douget comes on the heels of a standing-room-only performance last week by Marsalis, who was joined by the UNO Jazz Combo under the director of Victor Atkins III, also known affectionately as “the Victor Atkins Trio. The first of eight concerts in the series this season did not disappoint.

Performing with Marsalis for two sets were: James Partridge, tenor saxophone; Emily Fredrickson, trombone; Brian Murray, trumpet; Jordan Baker, piano, Tanarat Chaichana, bass; and Peter Varnado, drums. In total, they played eight pieces, included a touching performance by Fredrickson who honored her good name by performing alongside Marsalis one of his favorite songs, “Emily” by Johnny Mandel.

Jazz vibrations filled the Sandbar and spilled out into the courtyard where students sat around cocktail tables and a blue-lit fountain, sipping beers, smoking cigarettes and listening.
