Academic Affairs is pleased to announce and invite applications for this year’s Faculty Excellence Awards. These awards are designed to recognize and showcase the University’s outstanding faculty in teaching, service and mentoring.

Faculty Excellence in Teaching
Amount: $5,000
This award recognizes a full-time faculty member at the University of New Orleans for demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Excellence in teaching is defined broadly as, but is not limited to, creating clear and high expectations, demonstrating how students are to meet the expectations, increasing the knowledge level of students, engaging students and inspiring them to learn, building a sense of community within the classroom, and applying content to real life in a learner–centered manner.
Evidence of innovative teaching is the primary criterion by which candidates will be judged. Innovative teaching includes, but is not limited to, the use of new instructional technologies, the use of traditional technologies in creative ways, novel approaches to instruction, the use of co-curricular experiences, innovative curriculum for on-line teaching, successful incorporation of experiential learning, an innovative approach to assessment, and the use of creative approaches and new ways to engage students in the learning process. Innovative teaching should have a positive impact on teaching effectiveness, student learning, supporting diverse student learners, and student retention and career readiness.
Eligibility: All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty and full-time instructors with at least three years of teaching experience at UNO are eligible. The award recipient is expected to attend the Awards Ceremony.
Application Process:
- A copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae (no more than five pages).
- A statement written by the candidate, limited to two pages, (a) describing his/her teaching philosophy and (b) presenting evidence of excellence in teaching, including teaching innovation. A summary table of all the courses the candidate has taught for the last three years (including course title, level, and number of students); and summaries of teaching evaluation scores from three to four courses, with comparisons to evaluations within the College or School, if available.
- A letter of support from the candidate's Department Head, addressing teaching excellence. One to two additional letters from students attesting to instructional excellence or the educational impact of an instructional innovation. No letter of support should be more than three years old.

Faculty Excellence in Service
Amount: $5,000
The Faculty Excellence in Service award recognizes a faculty member who exemplifies outstanding service to the profession, the discipline, the department, the college, the university, and/or the broader community. Service activities are limited to work for which the faculty member receives no additional compensation but that have a tangible benefit to others.
Excellence in service will be measured in terms of activities that surpass the responsibilities of the position and are aligned with and benefit the university, college, or department (e.g. student recruitment and retention, experiential learning, equity and inclusive excellence, community engagement and partnerships, etc.). Evidence should show how the faculty member’s service contributes to achieving UNO’s strategic goals.
Eligibility: All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty and full-time instructors with more than three years of career experience at UNO. The award recipient is expected to attend the Awards Ceremony.
Application Process:
- A copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae (no more than five pages).
- A statement written by the candidate, limited to two pages, describing his/her service activities and the impact that they have had on achieving UNO strategic goals.
- A letter of support from the candidate's Department Head. One to two additional letters from members of professional organizations, service organizations, or others who have first-hand knowledge of the candidate’s service contributions. No letter of support should be more than three years old.

Faculty Excellence in Mentoring
Amount: $5,000
The Faculty Excellence in Mentoring award recognizes a faculty member who exemplifies outstanding mentoring to graduate or undergraduate students and/or to peers.
Excellence in mentoring may be defined as, but is not limited to, supporting, encouraging, and promoting the educational, professional and/or personal well-being of students and/or peers. It may include supporting students/peers in acquiring the skills and resources needed to succeed as scholars and professionals; sponsoring students/peers in the academic/professional community; career advising; academic counseling/coaching or other work related to advancing another person academically or professionally.
Eligibility: All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty and full-time instructors with more than three years of career experience at UNO. The award recipient is expected to attend the Awards Ceremony.
Application Process:
- A copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae (no more than five pages).
- A statement written by the candidate, limited to two pages, describing his/her mentoring activities and the impact that they have had on a student, former student, and/or peer.
- A letter of support from the candidate's Department Head. One to two additional letters from students and/or faculty who have benefited from being mentored, or others who have first-hand knowledge of the candidate’s mentoring contributions. No letter of support should be more than three years old.
