Council on Student Campus Climate, Inclusion, and Advocacy 

MISSION AND VALUES

The mission of the Council on Student Campus Climate, Inclusion, and Advocacy (SCCIA) is to develop, recommend, and advance initiatives that build and strengthen the educational, organizational, and institutional climate of UNO with respect to students’ perception and experience of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The SCCIA’s values include a commitment to:

  1. Transparency and open communication
  2. Inclusivity with representation in decision-making and recommendations
  3. Accountability through feedback loops
  4. Community building as a model for strengthening campus climate
  5. Engagement and interconnectedness
  6. Access to services and information

Purpose and Scope

The purpose of the Council on Student Campus Climate, Inclusion, & Advocacy (SCCIA) is to:

  • (a) advise the Associate Dean of Diversity and Student Affairs with recommendations to improve the retention and recruitment of a diverse student body through the Diversity Engagement Center and through institutional efforts;
  • (b) identify the inclusion and diversity strengths, issues, and opportunities within UNO that directly and indirectly impact student persistence;
  • (c) develop strategies and plans to examine ways in which we include and exclude (however unintentionally) student populations;
  • (d) systematically examine aspects of UNO to enhance its effectiveness and ability to meet the needs of its diverse student population through assessment and evaluation; and
  • (e) identify and amplify opportunities for cross-departmental/organizational collaborations engaged in initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and 
  • (f) respectfully celebrate and document the success of inclusivity approaches

Membership and Duties

The Council on Student Campus Climate, Inclusion, & Advocacy is made up of students, staff, and faculty. It is SCCIA’s job to: (a) make recommendations regarding inclusive and diverse approaches, (b) examine programs, activities, policies, publications, and practices to determine intentional or unintentional exclusiveness, and (c) enhance the visibility of departmental and institutional efforts to engage in issues of diversity and inclusion.
