Position Summary

The College of Engineering at the University of New Orleans invites applications for a position of Associate Dean to begin in July of 2020.  A Ph.D. degree in Engineering is a requirement for this position.  Successful applicants must possess a record of research excellence and demonstrate strong teaching commitments to graduate and undergraduate courses.  We are primarily looking for applicants whose expertise would extend and complement existing strengths within the college.

UNO is a public research university located in diverse and cosmopolitan New Orleans, one of the world's most fascinating cities.  UNO offers its diverse student body of 9,000 students more than 60 undergraduate and pre-professional programs and 40 graduate programs.  The UNO College of Engineering is unique to the Gulf Coast and plays an important role in the economic development of the region.  UNO's College of Engineering currently serves approximately 950 undergraduate and graduate students.

Responsibilities

Duties include administration, teaching, scholarship, and service.  The Associate Dean assists the Dean in facilitating all college activities and providing leadership toward achievement of excellence in teaching, research, and service activities of the college.  The Associate Dean works closely with the academic department chairs, the Dean of the College, the Vice Provost, the Provost, and other administrative unit directors in achieving the University’s strategic goals.  Duties are 75% administrative and 25% instruction. 

Administrative duties include:

  • Assist in directing graduate education.  Oversee graduate faculty nominations.  Act as college liaison to the Graduate School and Graduate Council.  Oversee the college Graduate Committee.  Advise all departments and programs regarding graduate curricula modifications.  Explore new graduate programs for the college.
  •  
  • Provide support to facilitate research and scholarly productivity of faculty and students.  Work with the Office of Research to assist faculty in developing research or training grants, to conduct peer review of research proposals, etc.  Act as an ambassador for the College of Engineering and work with industry partners to promote research projects.

  • Work with the Dean to develop new degree programs; Assist in the creation of workforce training, as necessary.
  •  
  • Coordinate Faculty Council and other committee appointees.
  •  
  • Work with the Dean and the Engineering Advisory Council to strengthen ties to the engineering community.  Assist the Dean with fundraising efforts.
  •  
  • In the absence of the Dean, serve as Administrator for all personnel actions and other administrative duties including building/facility oversight.
  •  
  • Serve as the Dean's representative at meetings and functions when needed.  Signs documents for the Dean in the Dean's absence.
  •  
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean.
Required Qualifications

Credentials must qualify the individual for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor, with at least three years previous experience as department chair or higher.

Desired Qualifications

Significant, successful experience as a director of a research center, associate dean, chair or equivalent.  Substantial experience in engineering education and research, including ABET evaluations.  Experience in developing and growing graduate programs, “self-support” programs in particular.
