Position Summary

The College of Engineering at The University of New Orleans (UNO) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, to begin in the Fall of 2020.  We are seeking a department chair who will provide leadership in all areas of scholarly activity (including teaching and service), and who will facilitate internal and external research.

UNO is a public research university located in diverse and cosmopolitan New Orleans, Louisiana, one of the world’s most fascinating cities.  UNO offers its diverse student body of 9,000 students more than 60 undergraduate and pre-professional programs and 40 graduate programs.  The UNO College of Engineering is unique to the Gulf Coast and plays an important role in the economic development of the region.  UNO’s Department of Mechanical Engineering currently serves approximately 350 undergraduate students.  In addition to the Bachelor of Science degree, students may earn the Master of Science degree in engineering and the Ph.D. degree in engineering and applied science.

Responsibilities

The department chair will be responsible for administration of all functions relating to the teaching, research, and service missions of the department.  These functions include but are not limited to:  maintain ABET accreditation of undergraduate programs, modernize undergraduate and graduate curricula, mentor and retain students, supervise departmental staff (hiring, reviewing, etc.), reappoint and promote faculty, fiscal responsibility, liaise with the Dean of the College and other university administrators, overall compliance with University policies and procedures, and growth and development of the research portfolio and graduate student body.

Required Qualifications

Strong record of research and teaching performance and credentials (including an earned PhD in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related field), commensurate with appointment as a full (or an associate) professor with tenure in the Department.

Desired Qualifications

Experience as department chair and eligible for appointment at rank of Professor with tenure.
