Writing Programs at UNO

Can writing change the world?
We certainly hope so...

UNO's commitment to the teaching of creative writing is evidenced by the number and diversity of writing programs available. Whether you're looking for an MFA degree or a stimulating workshop experience online or in Europe, one of our programs will be a fit for you. Our dedicated faculty can help you find your style and voice, or they can assist as you put the finishing touches on your novel before sending it to the publisher.

The Creative Writing Workshop is our resident MFA program and the campus mainstay. Writing workshops and literature classes are combined in a curriculum designed to enhance both writing and critical reading skills in the genres of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, playwriting, or screenwriting. Our excellent faculty have guided students to fruitful careers in publishing and teaching. Teaching assistantships and other forms of financial aid are available. Click here for more information.

The Low Residency MFA program offers flexible opportunities for students who are not able to come to the New Orleans campus, who have already begun their careers and need a schedule that accommodates their work schedule, who travel widely or live abroad, or who simply prefer the flexibility of a low residency program. Our innovative curriculum includes online classes in the Fall and Spring semesters and summer residencies in our summer programs in Europe.

Our famous summer programs abroad are open to both resident and low residency students, as well as guest students and non-credit participants. Since 1998, more than 1500 students and 200 faculty and guests have participated in these programs. Whether you attend the Writing Workshops in Edinburgh, Scotland or the Ezra Pound Center for Literature at Brunnenburg Castle in Italy, you will have a summer you will never forget.

We also sponsor a yearly Writing Contest for Study Abroad. One writer each in the genres of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting, are selected in a competition to attend any of our programs in Europe absolutely free. Click here to see contest guidelines and past winners.
