First, Onlys, Biggest and Bests

FOBBs are lists of UNO's "Firsts, Onlys, Biggests and Bests."  These are things that are unique to, or special about UNO, organized by academic college.  Each of the University's five colleges brings notable achievements and accolades to UNO and that carries over into the education provided to its students. 






 

College of Business

  • Largest business school in the state.
  • School of HRT has the largest undergraduate program in hospitality and tourism in the state.
  • School of HRT has the only master's program in hospitality and tourism in the nation with a 100% job placement rate (in existence for 11 years).
  • First and only master’s program in hospitality and tourism in the state.
  • The Hospitality Research Center is the first and only one of its kind in the state.
  • The Institute for Economic development is the first and only university-based real estate research center in the New Orleans area.
  • PhD program in financial economics is the only one of its kind in the region.
  • Largest MS in health care management program in the state.
 

College of Education and Human Development

  • Offers the only PhD program in educational administration in the UL System.
  • Offers the only special education program in Louisiana that is focused on deaf/hard of hearing and the only special education program focused on significant disabilities.
  • Prepares more educational personnel than any other college in metro New Orleans.
  • Ranks first in the state in number of nationally recognized teacher education and educational leadership programs of study. Currently there are 20 such programs in the college. 
  • The counselor education program is designated a Program of National Distinction by its accrediting body.
 

College of Engineering

  • Consistently ranked in the top two largest naval architecture and marine engineering (NAME) programs in the nation.
  • The only naval architecture and marine engineering program in the region providing significant impact on the maritime and ship-building industries in the Gulf Coast.
  • The only civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering program in the New Orleans area.
  • The only tow tank in the region, allowing for in water testing of ship designs and wave simulation/water conditions analysis.
  • Has the biggest structural testing laboratory in the state.
  • Home of the best equipped geotechnical laboratory in Louisiana.
  • Operates the largest power and energy research laboratory in the state.
 

College of Liberal Arts

  • Jazz studies students, faculty and alumni appear on more stages at the Jazz Fest each year than representatives from any other university.
  • Film arts program is the first and only one in the country with a bona fide partnership with the American Film Institute.
  • The Department of Planning and Urban Studies offers the only master’s degree in urban planning in the state.
  • Poet and distinguished professor of English Niyi Osundare has won the three most prestigious African literary awards.
  • Allan Millett, director of UNO’s Eisenhower Center and research professor of history, is the world’s foremost military historian on the Korean War.
  • UNO theatre has won more Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival awards than any other university in the state.
  • Center for Hazard Assessment, Response, and Technology is the only university research center in the country that focuses on mitigation.
  • UNO’s Ogden Museum is home to the largest collection of Southern art in the world.
  • Home of U.S. News & World Report top tier ranked master of public administration program.
  • UNO’s CenterAustria is one of three Austrian Studies Centers in North America, and is supported by the Austrian government.
 

College of Sciences

  • The Advanced Materials Research Institute is the first and best-equipped nanomaterials institute in the state.
  • The Department of Chemistry and AMRI run the only outreach program in the state for high school students to do cutting edge research.
  • Information assurance program has certifications from the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security.
  • Biggest minority recruitment program for earth science in the nation.
  • Only conservation biology Ph.D. in the state.
  • Gilda Reed, psychology, is the only public university faculty member from Louisiana to be named in The Princeton Review “Best 300 Professors” nationwide list.
