2015 STEM Scholars Camp

The University of New Orleans held its first STEM Scholars 5-day intensive transition or "boot" camp for incoming freshmen students in August of 2015. We had 39 students attend our inaugural camp. Biology majors attended a biology camp geared towards Biology I and science, engineering, and pre-engineering majors enrolled in one of the two math camps (Algebra or Calculus). The Scholars got a jump start on required course content, attended lectures from faculty who taught the first-year courses, developed critical skills necessary for academic success (e.g., note taking, time management, testing), had a safe space to fail without being graded, and developed study groups and a sense of community with other students who were sitting beside them in Fall classes. Scholars also learned about careers from professionals in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and were guided by peer mentors throughout the camp experience.

"I loved everything taught in the STEM Scholars camp and I believe it is exactly what I needed to prepare me for college as a STEM major. I'm extremely grateful I had this opportunity and I hope this camp remains an option for incoming STEM majors for many years to come. Thank you!" -STEM Scholar Camp Participant, 2015
