Our world is facing many challenges and changes, particularly to our biophysical environment. This topic includes a broad range of environmental issues, harmful aspects of human activity on the biophysical environment, and environmental challenges our local, regional, national and global community faces. These issues include land transformation, consumption, loss of biodiversity, over population, migration, deforestation, climate change, extinction of species, sea level rising, deterioration of freshwater ecosystems, global warming, over farming, fossil fuels, pesticides, and irrigation. The environment issue topic focuses on conservation, habitat restoration, energy efficiency and climate change mitigation techniques as well developing skills in public education, awareness and advocacy.

Ways to Get Involved

  • Volunteer with organizations that promote environmental conservation, protection, and education like Green Light, National Park Service, or the UNO Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences
  • Advocate for environmental policies you support and vote for policy makers who support important environmental issues
  • Volunteer with recycling, reusing and restoring organizations like the Green Project
  • Volunteer with green home building projects
  • Reduce your carbon footprint
  • Support recycling efforts in your community and workplace
  • Conduct research on innovate methods regarding environmental conservation and share these results and develop strategies to decrease carbon emissions and environmental degradation, and promote conservation of finite resources
  • Learn about environmental challenges in your community and advocate for necessary changes
