Freshman Advisor

This special section is designed to assist you, a new freshman, in determining which courses to take during your initial semester of attendance at UNO. You should read this section thoroughly and select your courses, if possible, before attending Orientation. You will have an opportunity at Orientation to meet with an academic advisor in your major and finalize your course selections.

Helpful Tips to Plan your Schedule

• A course load of 12 credit hours in a fall/spring semester or six credit hours in a summer term is considered full-time. Some students need to be full-time for financial aid, athletics, or insurance coverage.
• If you work 15 or more hours a week you are advised to attempt no more than 12 credit hours per semester, especially during your first semester.
• You should plan 2 to 21/2 hours of study time for each hour of time spend in class.
• A three-semester-hour course normally meets each week during the fall or spring semester for three 50-minute sessions (MWF) or two 75-minute sessions (TTh). If you have questions, you should discuss how credit hours work with your advisor during Orientation.
• No developmental courses (course numbers that begin with "0") may count towards fulfillment of degree requirements although they do count toward credit load for the semester.

• General Degree Requirements are courses that all students must take to complete a degree at UNO. This brochure addresses the initial selection of courses that fulfill general degree requirements in each college/degree.
• Please note the following in preparing your schedule:
  • All students are strongly encouraged to schedule an English and a Mathematics course during the first semester.
  • A social science and a humanities elective are appropriate for most students.
  • General Studies, Science, and Engineering majors who are eligible for science courses should schedule them beginning with the first semester of enrollment.
  • Students whose major includes a foreign language, and who have studied that foreign language in high school, should continue with that language as soon as possible.
  • Honors students should discuss honors courses with the honors advisor at Orientation.

English Placement Tests

All new freshmen, non-traditional students, and transfer students entering without transfer credit in English composition will be placed in the appropriate level of English through their ACT, SAT or AP scores. Please use the chart below to determine placement:
