This special section is designed to assist you, a new freshman, in determining which courses to take during your initial semester of attendance at UNO. You should read this section thoroughly and select your courses, if possible, before attending Orientation. You will have an opportunity at Orientation to meet with an academic advisor in your major and finalize your course selections.

2. Choose the Appropriate English Course

General Degree Requirements

Completion of English 1158 or 1159 with a C or better.

English Placement Tests

All new freshmen, non-traditional students, and transfer students entering without transfer credit in English composition will be placed in the appropriate level of English through their ACT, SAT or AP scores. Please use the chart below to determine placement:

3. Choose the Appropriate Mathematics Course

General Degree Requirements

Mathematics: Six hours at or above the 1000 level

To select the appropriate Mathematics course, you should (1) find the mathematics course(s) that apply to your major in the left column of the table and (2) check your eligibility (based on your ACT/SAT/Compass Mathematics score).

In selecting courses from these categories, please note that most of these courses are open to first semester freshman provided you meet any English or Math prerequisites. Exceptions for some courses in the colleges are noted after the courses.

4. Chose an Arts Course

Arts and Humanities – six hours. Three hours to fill the Arts requirement, to be taken from fine arts, music, or theatre or film related film, theatre and communication arts courses. Three hours to fulfill the Humanities requirement to be taken from English, foreign languages, history, or philosophy.
